　領伝助不図参候を是仕と申則人質に取込惣
　兵衛は早舟之儀申付候得与申追遣し候得は
　伝助を質に被取候故子之ためと存候哉則舟
　用意仕候然共其間時移今不審候処に古於此
　所頭取たる作蔵与申者先年相果候節及末期
　子共之義深く惣左衛門を相頼置候に付幼き
　娘壱人呼取人ならせ爰に縁付置候き彼女酒
　を持来旦那様是一つ参らせられ候得と申つ
　に進之奇酒をも不酌涙をはら〱と流し只物
　悲し気に相聞に候故扨は我等舟に乗申時打

　打殺申相談之内意知らん為是迄参候よと推
　量致し能社門出を祝候迚一盃傾けさらは最
　早帰候得と申戻候而伝助いざ参れと引立取
　あへす舟に乗早々おし出させ申候其時伝助
　親惣兵衛申候は数年之御馴染に御座候得は
　物騒成時分無心元存候間頭立候者六十人別
　之舟に而送り申度と申候惣左衛門申候は此
　方之構ひ無之与申出船仕候処弓鉄炮を揃舟
　二艘惣左衛門舟を中にして送り乗候由之事

領主の伝助が不意に参ったのを、「これは良い」と申して、すぐに人質に取り込んだ。惣兵衛は「早く舟の件を申し付けます」と申して追い遣わそうとしたところ、伝助を人質に取られたので、子のためと思ったのか、すぐに舟の用意をした。しかしながらその間に時が移り、今になって不審に思うところがある。昔この所の頭取であった作蔵という者が先年亡くなった際、臨終に及んで子供のことを深く惣左衛門に頼んでおいた。そのため幼い娘一人を呼び取って人となるまで育て、ここに嫁がせておいた。その女が酒を持ってきて「旦那様、これを一つお召し上がりください」と申したが、進められた酒も酌まず、涙をはらはらと流し、ただ物悲しげに聞こえたので、「さては我等が舟に乗る時に打ち

打ち殺す相談の内容を知って、そのためにここまで参ったのだろう」と推量し、「よい門出を祝うといって一杯傾けるなら、もはや帰れ」と申して戻し、伝助に「いざ参ろう」と引き立てて、取り急ぎ舟に乗り、早々に押し出させた。その時伝助の親である惣兵衛が申すには、「数年のお馴染みでございますので、物騒な時分で心もとなく存じます。頭立った者六十人を別の舟で送らせていただきたい」と申した。惣左衛門は申すには「こちらの構いは無用である」と申して出船したところ、弓鉄砲を揃えた舟二艘が惣左衛門の舟を中にして送り乗ったということである。

When the lord's retainer Densuke unexpectedly arrived, [Sōzaemon] said "This is perfect" and immediately took him as a hostage. Sōbei said "I will quickly arrange the boat matter" and tried to send him away, but since Densuke had been taken hostage, perhaps thinking of his child, he immediately prepared the boat. However, time passed in the meantime, and now he found it suspicious. Long ago, when a man named Sakuzō who was the headman of this place died some years before, on his deathbed he earnestly entrusted his children to Sōzaemon. Therefore, [Sōzaemon] took in one young daughter, raised her until she became a woman, and had her married here. This woman brought sake and said "Master, please partake of this," but [Sōzaemon] did not drink the offered sake, shed tears profusely, and appeared deeply sorrowful. [He thought] "Surely she has come here knowing the plan to kill

kill us when we board the boat," and surmised this. [He said] "If you pour a cup to celebrate a good departure, then go home now," and sent her back. [Then he said to] Densuke "Come, let us go" and hurried him along, quickly boarded the boat, and had it pushed out immediately. At that time, Densuke's father Sōbei said, "Since we have been acquainted for many years, and these are dangerous times making me uneasy, I would like to send sixty leading men in a separate boat as escorts." Sōzaemon replied, "Such arrangements are unnecessary," and departed, whereupon two boats equipped with bows and firearms took positions flanking Sōzaemon's boat and accompanied them.
