逃げ込んできた。町中からも残らず逃げ込んできた。敵たちは早速江東寺・桜井寺に火を付けたという。別当杢左衛門のところへ町奉行両人と町横目の原兵左衛門という人が居た。杢左衛門父子は桜井寺の攻撃部隊と同じ場所まで行ったが、敵が大勢いたので引き取った。その間に城から新兵衛が大将となって追手門の勢を集めて押し出した。若い侍たちは「あちこちで防戦すべきだ」と申したが、新兵衛が申すには「城中に放火犯が多数入り込んでいるようだ。城中を詮索し、籠城の用意をするのがよい」ということで押し込んだ。早速追手門内で放火犯たちを捕らえて切り捨てたところ

へ大勢が大声で叫びながら攻め寄せ、槍・長刀・斧・鉞などで御門を打ち破った。追手には菅野加兵衛・木村弥平次・林治部右衛門・相良金左衛門・白石市郎右衛門・野村長左衛門・青木庄七・隅部四郎左衛門その他、大手の塀裏に多数の侍衆が見えたが、はっきりとは覚えていない。親別当杢左衛門・馬場七之丞は門の部屋から鉄砲で撃った。追手で敵八十三人を討ち取った。大方は皆鉄砲で討ち殺した。味方は青木勝七が鉄砲で手傷を負った。その夜の八時分（午後2時頃）、敵方から町中をことごとく焼き払い、先手の門脇に町家が少し残った。撃ち残された
