[Right page] Matsukura Nagato-no-kami Katsuie's retainer samurai, fourteen horsemen with eighty firearms and about three hundred foot soldiers, pressed toward Fukae village to capture the villagers. However, about a thousand insurgents appeared and attacked with firearms, so five or six mounted warriors and about a hundred foot soldiers were killed, forcing a retreat to Takaki castle. The insurgents continued to pursue them, and with this momentum tried to take the castle by burning the castle town, breaking through the castle gates and attacking. However, the castle's samurai defended strongly and fired back with firearms, so about two hundred insurgents were killed and retreated. Also, tonight in Shimabara castle, various samurai gathered and Okamoto Shinbei said: "This time an unexpected uprising has occurred. However, since our lord Matsukura is in Edo, [Left page] you must follow our commands. The gods and Hachiman are watching your loyalty or disloyalty, and the depth of your achievements. There must be no self-interest." Using his staff to divide the forces, he ordered the left wing to defend the castle and the right wing to sally forth. There was not a single coward. With Shinbei and Mondo as generals, fifty to sixty horsemen and over three hundred foot soldiers sortied out. There was a mountain in front of Fukae village, and Shinbei, sensing there were ambush troops, arranged the ashigaru in front and positioned the samurai below as they advanced. As expected, there were over a thousand ambush troops who exchanged gunfire, and afterward engaged in sword fighting, with many dead and wounded on both sides. At this time, Kondo Yohei and Matsuda Uemon were killed in battle. Takemura Shinemon and Nakanishi Jingobei said, "Having gained victory, we should withdraw and sally forth again. If the enemy follows us..."
