　殿之築し新しき城に而門塀等も丈夫成により
　攻破る事叶はす門柱扉抔を斧に而打割き火
　炬を以焼し跡なとありし両度攻けれ共攻取
　られざるにより原と云古城を取立楯籠ける
　天草と云は同州唐津之城主寺沢兵庫頭忠高
　之領分に而肥前之内なから離島にて四万石
　之処也唐津ゟ海上四十八里あり此所不残切
　支丹に而ありて島原に而一揆蜂起したると
　聞て天草に而も蜂起して後一所共に原之城
　を取立籠城いたせり

　に得勝利候得は先引取可被申候与有之内小
　木右馬助見に不申尋候得は深江村之中押込
　申刻敵に左之肩先ゟ右之あはら下迄なた長

　溝へ転ひ死居申を引懸連て戻り養生候得は
　後には生申候能働与諸人誉申候只今小木小
　左衛門と申板倉隠岐守殿へ居申候
又曰島原は籠城厳仕侍共其妻子を本丸へ入致
　用心候然処城内之下々大方地下之者成故内

殿の築いた新しい城であって門や塀等も丈夫であるため、攻め破ることは叶わず、門柱や扉などを斧で打ち割き、松明をもって焼いた跡などがあった。両度攻めたけれども攻め取られなかったので、原という古城を取り立てて立て籠もった。

天草というのは同州唐津の城主寺沢兵庫頭忠高の領分であって、肥前の内でありながら離島であり四万石の所である。唐津から海上四十八里ある。この所は残らずキリシタンであって、島原で一揆が蜂起したと聞いて天草でも蜂起して、後に一緒になって原の城を取り立て籠城した。

別本『島原記』によると「十月二十六日　上略　新兵衛が申すには『このように勝利を得たのであれば、まず引き取るべきでございます』とあったうちに、小木右馬助を見かけないので尋ねたところ、深江村の中へ押し込んだ時に敵に左の肩先から右の腹下まで薙刀で切っ先が外れるほど打ち込まれ、その他所々に手傷を負い、溝へ転び死んでいるのを引きかけて連れて戻り、養生したところ、後には生き返った。よく働いたと諸人が誉めた。今は小木小左衛門と申して板倉隠岐守殿のところにおります』

Since it was a new castle built by that lord with sturdy gates and walls, they could not break through. There were traces where they had chopped the gate pillars and doors with axes and burned them with torches. Though they attacked twice, they could not capture it, so they took over an old castle called Hara and fortified themselves there.

Amakusa belonged to the domain of Terasawa Hyōgo-no-kami Tadataka, lord of Karatsu castle in the same province. Though part of Hizen province, it was a separate island worth 40,000 koku. It was 48 ri by sea from Karatsu. All the people in this place were Christians, and when they heard that an uprising had occurred in Shimabara, they also rose up in Amakusa, and later joined together to fortify Hara castle and hold it under siege.

According to another text, the "Shimabara Record": "October 26th [text omitted above] Shinbei said, 'Since we have achieved such victory, we should first withdraw.' During this time, when they could not see Ogi Uma-no-suke and inquired about him, they found that when he had pushed into Fukae village, an enemy had struck him with a naginata from his left shoulder to below his right side so forcefully that the blade tip was bent, and he had other wounds in various places. He had fallen into a ditch and was lying as if dead, but when they dragged him back and tended to him, he later revived. Everyone praised him for fighting well. He is now called Ogi Koza-emon and serves under Lord Itakura Oki-no-kami."

It also states: "At Shimabara they strictly maintained the siege, with the samurai placing their wives and children in the main keep for security. However, since most of the lower ranks in the castle were local people, the inner [situation was problematic]
