琉球国之事略
異国の書を按するに昔／流求（リウキウ）としるしたり近 代に及て琉球とは
記をり一説に流虬と記せしを今は琉球と記す／斯国虬（コ ノクニアマリヤウ）たい大海の
流の中にわたり□くれるかことくなれは琉虬といひしと 云々按する
に流虬の説心得られ次にわか国の書に見へし所はむかし鎮 西
の八争為朝大海の流にしたかひて求め出されし国なれは
流求としるすと云うせ説もあやまれり夫よりさき倭漢の

琉球国之事略
異国の書を調べると、昔は「流求（リウキウ）」と記していた。近世に至って「琉球」と記すようになった。一説には「流虬」と記していたものを今は「琉球」と記すという。この国は大海の潮流の中に漂い浮かんでいるようであるから「流虬」と言ったという説がある。考えてみると「流虬」の説は理解できる。次に我が国の書物に見える所では、昔鎮西八郎為朝が大海の潮流に従って探し求めて発見した国であるから「流求」と記すという説もあるが、これは誤りである。それよりも以前から、倭国と漢土の書物には皆「琉球」と記していた。一説には「龍宮」と言ったという。我が国では

Brief Account of Ryukyu Kingdom

According to one theory, what was written as "Liuxu" (流虬) is now written as "Ryukyu" (琉球).
