Preface to the Southern Islands Chronicle
The tribute offerings from the Okinawan islands to the imperial court already existed during the prosperous times of the royal dynasty. When the Shimazu clan was enfeoffed in Satsuma, they concurrently served as territorial lords of the twelve southern ocean islands. In the middle of the Muromachi period, the shogunate further commanded the Shimazu clan to administer Okinawa. During the Keichō era, when Okinawa failed to pay tribute, the Shimazu clan dispatched troops to demand accountability for this transgression.
