敗（やふり）身（み）を失（うしなふ）者（もの）古今（ここん）其（その）幾（いくはく）人（ひと）と云（いふ）事を知（しら）ずこれ
其 害（かい）の至（いたり）て大（おほい）なる誠（まこと）に懼（をそれ）て慎（つゝしむ）へきにあらずや
然（しかり）といへとも其 害（かい）又（また）是より甚（はなはた）しき者（もの）あり夫（それ）は
いかにと云（いふ）に唯（たゝ）酒（さけ）に因（より）て病（やまひ）を為（なす）なり凡（をよそ）人（ひと）に

身を滅ぼし命を失う者が古今どれほどいるか分からない。これはその害が極めて大きく、本当に恐れて慎むべきことではないだろうか。しかしながら、その害よりもさらに甚だしいものがある。それは何かというと、ただ酒によって病気になることである。およそ人にとって貴いところは生命より大きなものはない。国家は重いといっても、どうしてこの生命に勝るだろうか。況んや国家を保つ者が酒によって徳を失い、行いを過つことがあるといっても、或いは輔佐の適切な者を得る時は、その国家を失うに至らないであろう。ただ酒によって病気となり、その重篤なものは良医といえどもこれをどうすることも

Truly, as the foremost great thing that causes disease and harms health maintenance, nothing surpasses alcohol. However, the things that harm people's health maintenance are also various and extremely numerous.
