へき事なるへし
○孟子（まうし）に飲食（ゐんしい）の人（ひと）は人（ひと）是を賎（いやしむ）といへり凡（をよそ）他（た）
の飲食（ゐんしい）は是を貪（むさぼる）者（もの）は人（ひと）是を賎（いやしむ）といへとも酒（さけ）を
貪（むさほる）は是を賎（いやしむ）事なく却（かへり）て是を風流（ふうりう）とす唯（たゝ）
貪（むさほる）のみならはさもあれかし是を貪（むさほり）て性命（せいめい）を
顧（かへりみ）ざるに至（いたり）ては賎（いやしむ）へきの甚（はなはた）しき是に過（すぎ）る
はなし或（ある）古人（こじん）の酒（さけ）に中（あて）られて薬（くすり）を求（もとむ）る書（しよ）
翰（かん）に我（われ）聞（きく）酒（さけ）に中（あたる）の病（やまひ）は風流（ふうりう）なりと死（し）と隣（となる）

○孟子に「飲食の人は人これを賤しむ」と言っている。およそ他の飲食については、これを貪る者を人は賤しむと言うが、酒を貪ることについては、これを賤しむことなく、かえってこれを風流とする。ただ貪るだけならばそれでもよいが、これを貪って性命を顧みないに至っては、賤しむべきことの甚だしいことこれに過ぎるものはない。ある古人が酒に中毒して薬を求める書翰に「我聞く、酒に中る病は風流なりと。死と隣するを見る、風流いずくにかある」と言っている。どうして酒だからと言って

○Mencius said, "People despise those who are obsessed with eating and drinking." Generally speaking, while people despise those who are greedy for other foods and drinks, when it comes to greed for alcohol, they do not despise this but rather consider it refined and elegant. If it were merely greed, that might be acceptable, but when one becomes so greedy as to disregard one's very life, there is nothing that surpasses this as something that should be despised. An ancient person who suffered from alcohol poisoning and sought medicine wrote in a letter: "I have heard that illness from alcohol poisoning is considered elegant. Seeing death as a neighbor, where is there any elegance?" How could it be that just because it is alcohol,

there could be anything elegant about being poisoned by food and drink? Though the words in this letter are jest, this matter occurs constantly. This correspondence, repeated many times, finally caused great suffering. Although there should be nothing elegant about any illness, long ago there was a wealthy man's daughter, about seventeen or eighteen years old, who suddenly had her hands and feet become paralyzed and numb, unable to feed herself, her eyes staring wide open and unable to move her pupils. Her illness was extremely severe. When she was shown to a famous doctor named Katsukakyu, he laughed and said, "This is not difficult to cure," and had the furnishings in her room removed and the boards laid on the floor taken away.
