なり其（その）稀（まれ）なるはいかにと云（いふ）に凡（およそ）古今（ここん）の医書（いしよ）深（ふか）く
是を論（ろんする）事すくなし其（その）論（ろん）ずる者（もの）も諸書（しよしよ）に散在（さんざい）し

である。その稀であるというのはどういうことかというと、およそ古今の医書で深くこれを論じているものは少ない。その論じているものも諸書に散在していて、あるいはその大概を述べ、あるいはまた姑息的な言葉が多い。朱丹渓はあれほどの名医である。その言葉に「醇酒は大熱にして大毒がある。冷やして飲むのが良い」と言っている。これは姑息的な言葉に近い。その大熱大毒というほどならば、どうして飲むべからずと言わないのか。そのような大毒のある物ならば、冷やしたからといって害がないとは言えないはずである。そうであるのに、また医説の論に「冷酒は盛夏の時といえども病気を引き起こす」と言っている。

そう思うと、これもまた「熱酒を飲む者も害がない」と言っている。丹渓は熱酒が病気を引き起こすことを言い、医説は冷酒に害があることを挙げている。それならば冷熱ともに病気を引き起こすではないか。しかるに彼は冷酒が良いと言い、これは熱酒を飲むべしと言うのは、両方とも誤りに似ている。ただ冷熱ともに過飲すべからずと言うのみが過ちがないであろう。厳用和の説に「冷酒を飲めば久毒痢を引き起こす」と言っている。また「留飲の症は冷酒を飲んで引き起こす」と言っている。三因方にも「冷熱の酒醴を飲めば、ついに毒痢を起こす」と言っている。それゆえにまた丹渓治案の内にも一人が冷酒に酔い

Even those that do discuss it are scattered throughout various books, some describing only the general outline, while others contain many temporizing words. Zhu Danxi was such a renowned physician. In his words, he said "Pure alcohol has great heat and great toxicity. It is good to drink it cold." This is close to temporizing language. If it has such great heat and great toxicity, why does he not say one should not drink it at all? If it is something with such great toxicity, one cannot say there is no harm just because it is cold. Yet in another medical discourse, it says "cold alcohol causes illness even in the height of summer."

Danxi speaks of hot alcohol causing illness, while the medical discourse mentions the harm of cold alcohol. If so, don't both cold and hot cause illness? However, he says cold alcohol is good, while this one says hot alcohol should be drunk - both seem to be in error.
