【Right page】 Tametomo cherished and delighted in Kiheiji, visiting his home often, spending his days hunting together with him, and no longer seeking anything beyond this way of life. On days when he ventured into the mountains, he would always bring one of the two wolves with him, and the wolves, as if naturally trained hunting dogs, were skilled at flushing out boar and deer, and more often than not would bite the prey to death themselves and present it to their master, without requiring him to raise a hand. On one occasion, Sudō Shigezue remonstrated with his lord, saying: "My lord, you are by right the legitimate heir of the Seiwa Genji line and ought to become the governor of a great province. Yet simply because you have incurred the displeasure of the Great Lord, you have altogether forsaken the martial arts and taken up the pursuits of a hunter — this I cannot comprehend. It is said that a person follows not birth but upbringing, and that one who mingles with red dye is turned red. I implore you to be mindful of this common saying." Speaking thus directly and frankly, Shigezue made his appeal, to which Tametomo smiled and replied: "What you say is reasonable. However, though I have become a wanderer, this does not mean my resolve has changed. Gonnokami Suetō is a man of narrow capacities who envies those of talent and despises those who surpass him. Since I receive his support while dwelling in the midst of his animosity, 【Left page】 if I were to lack forethought for the long term, disaster would arise from close at hand. For this reason, appearing to spend my days doing nothing but hunting in the mountains and seeking nothing else is intended to put Suetō's mind at ease. Moreover, look — every beast I take in the hunt I give to Kiheiji to help sustain his livelihood. By this too, you should know that I do not greedily pursue petty gains, nor do I hunt in the mountains merely for my own pleasure." Hearing this whispered confidence, Shigezue was deeply moved, and said, "I failed to understand any of this, and in my presumptuousness I offered needless counsel — truly a fault on my part," and withdrew with every appearance of being greatly pleased. There is nothing more to tell of this period. Thus the year moved on, and the beginning of the third spring month arrived. Tametomo had already turned sixteen and had grown into a fine young man of full stature. Seeing this, Shigezue reflected: "Were he in the capital, the occasion of the court appointments would afford him a place among the officials. Yet here he wanders in this remote backwater, his dwelling no more than a few rooms in size, with only two people — lord and retainer — residing within. Even if it be by way of punishment, in four years there has not been a single word of communication. Does the Great Lord not feel in his heart..."
