【Right page】 Shigezue lamented that the Great Lord must surely be unfeeling, and in his wretchedness he resented the world on his master's behalf — the depth of his loyal sincerity was truly admirable. Now, one day Tametomo set out while it was still before dawn, carrying his bow and arrows and leading on a leash the wolf called Yamao, intending to head for Mount Yū. Sudō Shigezue pulled at his lord's sleeve and said: "Last night I had troubling dreams, and even after I woke I felt an inexplicable unease in my chest and could not calm myself. I beg you, please call off today's mountain hunt." Before he had even finished speaking, Tametomo laughed and replied: "It is said that dreams arise from the weariness of the five organs. To be troubled by such things befits a woman, not a man. Set your heart at ease and keep good watch over the house." Shigezue then said further: "The men of old have said that one should be cautious when facing any undertaking. Nevertheless, if you will not remain behind, then please take me along with you." He entreated this again and again without ceasing, until Tametomo replied: "If you feel so strongly about it, why should I refuse? Come along with me." With these words Tametomo set out, and Shigezue, greatly pleased, lit the way with a pine torch and departed together with his lord. Presently, the party of Tametomo and his retainer stopped at Kiheiji's house at the foot of Mount Yū, calling out to invite him to accompany them. 【Left page】 Yashiro came out to greet them, first offering them hot water to drink, and said: "My husband Kiheiji went out to the mountain before dawn this morning. But since he has not been gone long, if you hurry after him you should be able to catch up with him halfway up the mountain." "Then let us make haste," said Tametomo, and the two dashed off from that spot, pushing deep into the mountains at full speed. Since it was not yet dawn, the way ahead was dark, and in the end they could not find Kiheiji. Having run so swiftly they had grown exhausted, so they drew up beneath a great camphor tree and, lord and retainer both, sat down upon a tree stump to wait for daybreak. Utterly overcome by drowsiness, they both began to doze off, when presently the wolf Yamao let out a single loud howl and seized the edge of his master's *mukabaki* in his teeth, pulling at it. Both Tametomo and Shigezue startled awake and looked around in all directions, but there was nothing to obstruct their view. Thinking it merely the wolf playing a trick, they attempted to sleep again, when Yamao barked fiercely once more and seemed on the verge of actually biting, whereupon Tametomo fixed him with a sharp stare and said: "It is said that though tigers and wolves may grow accustomed to men, they are difficult to truly tame — and rightly so. This beast, watching for the moment when I sleep, intends to devour me..."
