【Right page】 "Do not think you can take me so lightly — I shall make you see what I am made of!" Tametomo snarled, gripping the hilt of his sword and glaring at Yamao for a time. Shigezue too kept his guard up, loosening his *tsubakouchi* ready to intervene at a moment's notice, but Yamao, undaunted by this display, continued to howl — two, three times — and suddenly made to lunge forward. Shigezue leapt upon the wolf and struck a clean blow: the wolf's head was severed from its body, and it seemed to flash upward into the branches of the camphor tree. Then, as fresh blood came spattering down, something fell from the treetop and struck the ground with a great resounding thud. Both lord and retainer were startled again and bewildered; steadying their eyes in the faint light of the pre-dawn stars, they looked — and saw a great serpent, its girth no less than the trunk of the camphor tree itself, of a length impossible to measure, with the wolf's severed head clamped in its throat. The serpent still coiled its lower half around the tree, writhing, so the two drew their swords and thrust through it again and again, dispatching it with relative ease. Yet Tametomo was stricken with deep remorse and said: "It was because this great serpent was reaching down from the branches to swallow me whole that Yamao howled again and again, tugging at my garment's hem 【Left page】 to warn me — and yet I thought in my single-mindedness that the beast was turning on me, and I was fool enough to misread it. Though Yamao now lies dead by Shigezue's blade, his determined spirit lingered in that severed head and saved his master — truly admirable. I was in the wrong. I was in the wrong." At these words, Shigezue was overwhelmed with shame and wept bitterly; but after a moment he said: "That my dream last night was so disturbing must surely have been an omen of this very event. And to think that even a wolf could feel gratitude and loyalty, sacrificing its life to slay its master's enemy — I myself am not even the equal of a beast. Despite serving at your side all these years, I have yet to repay even a fraction of your lordship's kindness, and worse still, I am the one who struck down Yamao. My shame and mortification know no bounds. What is to be done?" he lamented. Tametomo soothed him and continued to mourn for Yamao without end. By this time the night had grown somewhat lighter, and as they watched, clouds began to rise over the range of mountains; the sky, which until just moments before had been perfectly clear, suddenly gathered into darkness, and a wind came sweeping through. Though it was only the beginning of the third month, lightning flashed incessantly, and even thunder rolled across the sky with an ominous roar, as if it might strike right down upon the very summit above them. At this, Tametomo paused... </translation_ja>
