望月太郎は当国の領主であったので、高梨もついには挨拶（交渉）に応じざるを得なくなった。そこで、「娘のことは十五日の筒粥（つつかゆ）の神事に任せましょう」と言った。
これによって、太郎は豆を竹筒に入れて粥の中に入れ、次郎は米を入れた。それぞれの竹筒がよく熟した（豆や米がよく入った）方へ娘を嫁がせようという約束をした。
高梨もまた、神事のことには（さすがに）畏れ敬うのであった。
春が来ると、まず筒粥の占いを行い、その五穀の良し悪しを知るのである。
「太郎めの所願満足（望みが叶うこと）（になってたまるか）！」

**[Here Begins the Third Volume]**
Mochidzuki Tarō was the lord of the province, and so Takanashi was ultimately compelled to receive his proposal. He thus declared: "As for the matter of my daughter, let us leave it to the divine ritual of the *tsutsu-kayu* on the fifteenth day."
In response to this, Tarō placed beans into a bamboo tube and put it into the gruel, while Jirō placed rice into his tube. They made a pact that the daughter would be given in marriage to whichever man's bamboo tube showed the better result — that is, whichever was more fully filled after cooking.
Takanashi, too, held the sacred ritual in deep reverence and dared not defy its verdict.
When spring arrived, the *tsutsu-kayu* divination was first performed, and from it the quality of the five grains for the year — and the fate of the matter — would be known.
"That scoundrel Tarō getting what he wants — over my dead body!"
