衣服ではなく、新子と呼ぶのは餅米ではない。昨日は娘分であった者が今日は女将さんと変わり、羽織が化けて子どもになるなどということは、いまだ『礼記』の月令にも見ることがない。初回の客を騙し取り、盗みを売った跡をつけて待っていれば、鼻をあかされることがある。宵のうちに泊まる客の落ち着いた顔、朝の身支度の眠たそうな顔、四つ時明けのしっとりとした様子、昼遊びの勇ましい様子。妓女の手紙は独立した草書のように読めず、隠語は蛮族の言葉のように理解できない。呼ばれてやって来て、送られて帰り、嫌がられてのぼせ上がる者もあれば、好かれても進まない者もある。浮気の風は鼻先を吹き、真実の雨は膝のあたりに降る。客は千差万別、遊女の臨機応変ぶり、実にこれこそ遊郭の盛事であることよ。
○ここに相州平塚の宿で花水橋の上を通ると、武州御所五郎丸の半晒しの藍染めの仏崎羽織、十番仕立てのお馬やひらの馬乗り袴、大小の拵えに気を遣えば、刀は鍔もなく長くて、鉄の縁頭、鉄の木目鍔に腕貫きが付いている。

The composed faces of guests staying for the evening, the sleepy faces during morning preparations, the moist atmosphere at the fourth hour of dawn, the spirited manner of daytime pleasure-seekers. The letters of courtesans are unreadable like independent cursive script, and their secret language is incomprehensible like barbarian dialects. Some are called and come, sent off and return, despised yet infatuated, while others are favored yet hesitant to proceed. The wind of infidelity blows past one's nose, while the rain of sincerity falls around one's knees. Customers are infinitely varied, courtesans adaptable to every situation - truly this is the grand spectacle of the pleasure quarters.
○Here, passing over Hanamizu Bridge at Hiratsuka post station in Sagami Province, one sees a warrior from Musashi's Gosho Goromaru wearing a half-bleached indigo Buddhist-style haori of tenth-grade tailoring, horse-riding hakama, with attention paid to the mounting of his long and short swords.
