「悪く御座いす。粋でない男に青突きを注いでくれませんか」
〈五〉「よせ、また借金を起こすだろう」

〈女房のふさ〉《割書：やって来て》「時宗さん、お茶漬けはいかが」
〈五〉「もう今夜は食うまい」《割書：折から下女にて》
〈女房のひで〉「もし、大高屋へ猪牙舟を一艘漕がせてください。馬入川の潮止めまでです。そして起き番は一人でいいですよ。今夜は泊まりが少ないから」《割書：という声が聞こえる。これは四つ明けの台詞である。○大高屋というのは縄町の貸舟業者で、ここの茶屋々々へ出入りの船宿である。また起き番というのは北国で言う舟の番のことである》
△《割書：かくて床が回り、〈五〉〈蝶〉は床の内へ入る。〈蝶〉は年が十八ばかり、洗い髪を落としばらげの島田に藁で結い、柘植の小さな櫛をちょいと落ち着いて前髪の所へ。銀の短い簪を差し、三両ぐらいもするべっ甲物を二本ほど差す。白粉なしの素顔、衣装は素肌に透き屋縮、花色繻子の帯、白縮緬の下帯。ただしこれは着替えたものである。こいつは五日勘定に三十も売り詰めるという奉公人である。〈五〉もまだ今年は未だ二十で若く、苦味のある色男、拵えは藍微塵の綿縮緬の浴衣、無地の小袴の帯、下帯は紺縮緬である。〈蝶〉は床の中に腹這いになり、女真語の実の玉の切れで拵えた小さな髪入れの中から黒塗りにした自惚れ鏡を出して見ながら、簪で前髪のほつれを直している》

There aren't many overnight guests tonight." 《Interlinear: This voice can be heard. This is dialogue from the fourth hour of dawn. ○Otakaya refers to a boat rental business in Nawa-cho that serves the various tea houses here. Also, okiban refers to what they call boat watchmen in the northern provinces.》
△《Interlinear: Thus the sleeping area is prepared, and 〈Go〉 and 〈Cho〉 enter the bed chamber. 〈Cho〉 is about eighteen years old, with washed hair done up in a loose shimada style tied with straw, a small boxwood comb placed casually in her front hair. She wears a short silver hairpin and about two tortoiseshell ornaments worth around three ryo. No face powder, natural complexion. Her outfit consists of see-through crepe directly on her skin, a flower-colored satin obi, and white crepe under-obi. However, this is a change of clothes. This courtesan serves about thirty customers per five-day accounting period. 〈Go〉 is still only twenty this year and young, a somewhat bitter-looking handsome man. His outfit is an indigo-speckled cotton crepe yukata, a plain hakama sash, and navy crepe loincloth. 〈Cho〉 lies on her stomach in the bed chamber, taking out a black-lacquered vanity mirror from a small hair accessory case made from cut Jurchen berries, looking at herself while fixing loose strands of her front hair with a hairpin.》
