強（つよ）飛 吹矢（ふきや）のことく昨夜（ゆふべ）の鬢（ひん）さしの
翌（あした）に翻（ひるがへる）かことく流行（りうかうの）はやきは都（すべ）て煙（いろ）
花（ざと）のならはせなり故に今 再（ふたゝ）ひ此地を
穿鑿（せんさく）して十二 銭（もん）目の筆（ふで）のはつみに
三 銭（もん）目の胸（むね）のうはを人はへ合（がつし）ていて
一 部（ふ）の書（しよ）となす猶《割書：予｜ 》か穿（うかち）のいたら
さる所（ところ）は此地の博子（はくし）のくはしきを待

六年出火
河豚羹（ふぐじる）を不食（くはぬ）愚鹵（たはけ）あり。
くふ癡呆（たはけ）あり。くはぬ愚昧（たはけ）は
美味（びみ）を不知（しらず）。くふ素痴（たはけ）は有毒（どくある）
をしらず毒あるをしらず
して。くらふ人は論（ろんずる）に不足（たらず）。
現代語訳
激しく吹く矢のごとく、昨夜の鬢差しが翌朝には変わってしまうように、流行の移り変わりの速さは、すべて色街の習わしである。そのため今再び此の地を詳しく調べて、十二文の筆の初めに三文の胸の内を付け合わせて一冊の書となす。なお私の調査の行き届かない所は、この地の博識な人の詳しい知識を待つのみである。

寛政六年、出火あり。
河豚汁を食べない愚か者がいる。
食べる愚か者もいる。食べない愚か者は
美味しさを知らない。食べる愚か者は毒があることを
知らない。毒があることを知らず
して食べる人は論じるに足りない。
英語訳
Like a strong arrow shot from a blowgun, just as yesterday evening's hair ornament is changed by the next morning, the speed of changing fashions is entirely the custom of the pleasure quarters. Therefore, I have once again thoroughly investigated this place, combining a twelve-mon brush's beginning with three-mon worth of inner thoughts to create one volume. Still, for those areas where my investigation was inadequate, I can only await the detailed knowledge of the learned scholars of this place.
Postscript
In the sixth year of Kansei, there was a fire.
There are fools who do not eat fugu soup.
There are fools who do eat it. The fools who don't eat it
do not know its delicious taste. The fools who eat it do not know
that it is poisonous. Those who eat it without knowing
it is poisonous are not worth discussing.
