they said. Since the young retainers had already taken the high ground from behind and rallied, he stood up while holding his long sword and drove back the enemies who came charging at him. The enemies retreated behind pine trees and between large stones. Only Tazaemon's unit reached this place, and no other allies followed. Only the rōnin Murakami Kizaemon and Kuboyama Kiemon reached as far as the burnt ruins on the right side, but no one advanced beyond Tazaemon. Afterward, because his foot was painful from the spear wound and walking became difficult, he ordered that the unit's foot soldiers be commanded by his younger brother Shikiemon, and Tazaemon calmly withdrew without panic. He paid his respects in front of the main camp where Lord Kuroda and his father and son, three people in total, were present. Then he went before Lord Hyōgo-no-kami, reported the situation of the advance guard, and was ordered by Lord Hyōgo-no-kami to quickly withdraw to a hut for medical treatment, so he withdrew to the hut. Besides this, the stones that struck Tazaemon behind the wall were numerous, and his armor was damaged in various places. A doctor named Hossumi, a disciple of Hōin Keiyu, was immediately called to treat his wounds. In this manner, he repeatedly sent reports about the advance guard's situation to Lord Hyōgo-no-kami's main camp from beginning to end. It is said that from start to middle to end, he surpassed all others in his efforts and took initiative in various places.
