[the battle standard] was placed, and without increasing the number of troops, he took seven men - Kaji Seiemon, Wada Tarohyoe, Mano Tokuemon, attendant Tomioka Rokurōzaemon, Handa Mohyoe, along with one spear-bearer and one standard-bearer - and advanced to near the main keep. He concealed his momentum by lowering the battle standards, took a secret path, placed the standard on himself, and rushed into the area near the main keep. Looking for weak points among the attackers, he immediately began scaling the earthwork. His attendants said, "This is work fit for common soldiers. It would be proper to have a unit of light infantry clear the way before entering the castle," and tried to climb the earthwork by placing their hands on it. But he held his spear horizontally against their armor to restrain them, and though he tried to lead them along, they ultimately would not consent. Meanwhile, Izu-no-kami sent word through Sakai Sanjūrō asking "Why are you making an independent charge? You should return quickly," but this was ignored.
Then through Iwagami Tsunosuke came the message: "If I hear that you have been wounded, I am also resolved to charge in and die in battle. If you have any consideration, you must return." Tsunosuke grabbed the left sleeve of his armored coat and would not let go. Kai became angry and put his hand on his short sword, drawing it more than halfway, but someone restrained him from the side. Tsunosuke would not release the sleeve, saying earnestly "Even by any path, serving one's lord is the same thing." While he was speaking with heartfelt sincerity, his attendants rushed up and surrounded him from front and back. During this time, Izu-no-kami's restraining words came repeatedly, and Inoue Chikugo also came forward to restrain him. Finally, just before nightfall, he returned to his position. After that, Nakabō Chōhyoe went toward Renchi, and as night fell, the main keep...
