　ゟ乗沙汰を松倉家来高橋伊左衛門桑野孫兵
　衛両人聞付仕寄場之番所ゟ先江一曲輪付出
　し高出の所に相詰る桑野か組市川平兵衛も
　居たり此処江岡本新兵衛来而肥前之衆出丸
　江乗沙汰無心元迚見分春る処江牢人村上久
　左衛門来而新兵衛方江行此方ゟ早乗可申哉
　与云新兵衛返答に者肥前衆を見合可然と申
　久左衛門又申肥前衆之乗様子を見合せん迚
　若乗おく連ては如何与申時桑野孫兵衛聞て
　心得多り与人に先を懸ら連ては無念成扁し

　迚其侭馬出しの口志とみ竹束壱束引の希其
　間ゟ出二之丸江一番に乗込高橋伊右衛門も
　続て乗込一番桑野与名乗高橋と続たるとい
　ふ塀之内江入て見連は口六尺斗之塀有り桑
　野其刎越多り高橋は塀ゟ登る所を鉄砲尓て
　討連たり塀除之小屋ゟ七八間先に人数多ま
　里と相見江広場に敵七八拾人斗居たる処江
　桑野壱人懸り通塀弐尺斗之土手を中に置敵
　ふせ里合佐野小平次桑野左之跡に続てせり
　合其外迄に来るは杉山五郎兵衛村田作右衛

から乗り込むという沙汰を、松倉家来の高橋伊左衛門と桑野孫兵衛の両人が聞きつけ、仕寄場の番所から先へ一曲輪付近に出て、高台の所に詰めていた。桑野の組の市川平兵衛もそこにいた。そこへ岡本新兵衛が来て、肥前の衆が出丸へ乗り込むという沙汰を心もとなく思い、見分しているところへ、浪人の村上久左衛門が来て新兵衛の方へ行き、「こちらから早く乗り込むべきでしょうか」と言った。新兵衛は返答で「肥前衆の様子を見合わせるのが良いでしょう」と申した。久左衛門がまた「肥前衆の乗り込みの様子を見合わせようとして、もし乗り遅れてしまってはいかがでしょう」と申した時、桑野孫兵衛がこれを聞いて「心得た。人に先を懸けられては無念である」と

言って、そのまま馬出しの口へさっと竹束一束を引き寄せ、その間から出て二の丸へ一番に乗り込んだ。高橋伊右衛門も続いて乗り込み、一番は桑野と名乗り、高橋が続いたという。塀の内に入って見ると、高さ六尺ばかりの塀があり、桑野はその塀を跳び越えた。高橋は塀から登るところを鉄砲で撃たれた。塀際の小屋から七八間先に人数が集まっていると見えた。広場に敵が七八十人ばかりいるところへ、桑野一人が駆け込んだ。通路の二尺ばかりの土手を中に置いて敵が伏せて合戦した。佐野小平次が桑野の跡に続いて競り合い、その他にやって来るのは杉山五郎兵衛、村田作右衛

The news that [Nabeshima's forces] would charge in was overheard by two retainers of Matsukura: Takahashi Izaemon and Kuwano Magobei. They advanced from the guard post of the siege works to near the first bailey and took position at an elevated spot. Ichikawa Heibei from Kuwano's unit was also there. Okamoto Shinbei came to this place and, feeling uneasy about the news that the Hizen forces would charge into the outer bailey, was observing the situation when the rōnin Murakami Kyūzaemon arrived and went to Shinbei, asking "Should we charge quickly from here?" Shinbei replied, "It would be best to coordinate with the Hizen forces." When Kyūzaemon said again, "If we wait to coordinate with the Hizen forces' charge and end up being late, what then?" Kuwano Magobei heard this and said, "Understood. It would be regrettable to let others take the lead," and

immediately pulled a single bamboo bundle to the opening of the horse guard, emerged from between them, and was the first to charge into the second bailey. Takahashi Iemon also followed and charged in. It is said that Kuwano claimed to be first, with Takahashi following. When they entered inside the fence, there was a fence about six feet high. Kuwano leaped over this fence. Takahashi was shot with a rifle while climbing over the fence. It appeared that forces were gathered seven or eight ken ahead from the huts beside the fence. In the plaza where about seventy or eighty enemies were positioned, Kuwano alone charged in. With an earthwork about two feet high placed in the middle of the passage, the enemies took cover and fought. Sano Koheiji followed in Kuwano's tracks and engaged in close combat. Others who came included Sugiyama Gorobei and Murata Sakuemon
