They encamped at the castle's koshi-kuruwa (lower secondary fortification). Here, Itō Sagenta's eldest son, Kanzaemon, had been absent from the previous winter's campaign for certain reasons and had only recently arrived at Arima to join the forces. Finding himself caught up in the New Year's Day castle assault, he felt mortified, thinking: "Even today I am off duty, and I was not even informed by those at the siege positions" — yet he was moved by the urgency of the situation. When our forces launched their attack on the main keep, Kanzaemon advanced ahead of all others. He charged up toward several dozen enemies entrenched in the lower secondary fortification, exchanged numerous spear thrusts with five or six enemies who had advanced to the forward position, and though he received one wound, he ultimately struck down one enemy. As our allies pressed their attack upward, the castle soldiers either were killed or withdrew with wounds. Kanzaemon took the head of the enemy he had felled and stood up, but turning to Tanida Hanzaemon, he declared: "I am casting aside this head in order to compete for the vanguard position," and threw the head aside, then dashed toward the main castle. He had climbed about halfway up the stone wall when the enemy struck him down with stones.
