took the eastern promontory. When about 200 men of Hosokawa-dono's forces attacked the square courtyard (masugata) at the water gate, about 300 rebels advanced with their spears leveled, and both sides' spear points clashed fiercely at a distance of about five to six shaku. Hosokawa-dono's forces retreated and then counterattacked in this manner twice, and when it appeared that the spear points would clash for a third time, the enemy all climbed up the slope and withdrew into the interior. Hosokawa-dono's forces entered the water gate, but there was no spear fighting. At that time, Matsuura's forces approached the stone wall of the watchtower on the left side of the water gate, whereupon the enemy fired their muskets all at once and immediately withdrew. There were some wounded among our allies. The rebel men and women lay piled upon one another like level ground, which was trampled underfoot.
At dusk we attacked the main bailey. Ukon also attacked together with us. Since I was also off-duty from the siege works, I arrived late at the second bailey with the same forces, but I attacked the main bailey at the same time as those who had come earlier from the siege works. The enemy did not fight even once and withdrew into the interior. At this time, some would occasionally capture those left behind, or take the heads of those piled up and lying under the stone walls, or cut off women's noses and such - there were many who did various such things, but this was not used at all within the Matsuura household. It was indeed the kind of thing that should be abandoned and forbidden. A few musket shots were fired from the interior, but Matsuura's forces continued fighting in the main bailey...
