had not returned. He would probably die in battle. Perhaps he might be wounded. In any case, we want to call him back, but what should we do?" was said, but since there was no one who would volunteer to go, when they were considering who to send to call him back, Jirōemon offered to go, and they accepted his intention. Jirōemon said to the squad leader named Asano Geki: "It being the middle of the night, and moreover a dark night, even if he dies in battle there would be no proof. Truly it would be a meaningless dog's death, regrettable and pitiful, but since there is no other way, it cannot be helped," and departed.
He also went toward the castle town area, and taking various positions in places other than where the vanguard troops' watch fires were burning, he searched the castle town. However, he could not meet Heizaemon, so he decided he had no choice but to return and walked back about one chō. But thinking that if someone else were ordered to bring him back, it would be possible to go all the way, he turned back and searched again. Then by divine providence he encountered [Heizaemon] who had been struck down. Immediately accompanying Heizaemon, he appeared before Tango-no-kami-dono, who spoke words of thanks in very good spirits.
The memorandum of Bettō Mokuzaemon states: "On the 27th day of the second month at the hour of the monkey, it appeared that [forces] from Nabeshima-dono's unit broke into the outer citadel and set fires, so everyone gradually launched a general assault. At that moment, Makino Denzō-dono was wounded. Matsukura Ukon-dono also injured his hand
