Due to his distinguished service at the age of eighty-one, he was summoned to Shimabara in Hizen Province and arrived at camp in mid-February. However, since his eldest son Hachiemon was in Edo as a hostage, he brought his second son Man'emon with him. On the 27th, that Man'emon fought valiantly but was killed in battle. Seven of his retainers also died together with him. According to "Kōtei Kanka Zassho" (Miscellaneous Writings in Leisure Time): During the Shimabara Rebellion, when Lord Kuroda Chikuzen-no-kami's forces stormed into the main castle on February 27th, upon seeing this, three brothers on horseback went to the camp of Lord Matsudaira Izu-no-kami. What was said to Lord Izu-no-kami was roughly: "If there are those who show favoritism in military law at this place, I intend to report it to the shogunate in Edo." Lord Izu-no-kami replied, "What kind of matter might this be? This is an unexpected statement." Lord Chikuzen said: "That is the matter. Previously, when the camp positions of the Tachibana and Matsukura families were transferred to us, I said that we could return the siege works to either of the two families' forces, but there was no agreement, and the coastal position was transferred to us. I understood the reasoning at that time, but since it seemed like flattery to our position and there were various opinions, I accepted it without objection. If the positions of both families had been transferred to Hosokawa Etchū-no-kami, my wish would not be fulfilled, nor would Etchū-no-kami's wish be fulfilled, so this is not favoritism. Generally speaking, this rebellion
