　さる吟味と独言して三町程引取て備を設
　る処に案之如く塀裏ゟ敵打立而味方之先
　手右往左往尓崩連掛る金右衛門は前之詞
　に恥て芝居を踏やるといへ共我組大方崩るゝ
　美濃は能場に人数を備へて少も動す美濃
　か胴勢に而押る故崩連懸る味方踏登々ま川
　て備江堅固成よし美濃者関け原大坂数度
　之場数あ里し人に而旧主上杉景勝家人也島
　原之時分は九拾余也成程達者に而老衰之気
　無五十斗之人程に慥成しと也

額波集曰島原一揆之時松平伊豆守息甲斐守
　抜懸して而進高名有希連共其沙汰に茂ふ
　及其頃大久保彦左衛門伊豆守江被申候者色々
　利口て御申阿連共武道は御不案内也とそ被
　申たる夫は何事に而成与豆州被申候得者さ連は
　御子息甲州若き人之抜懸之手柄阿れ共貴
　所之被成方惣而闇之錦尓成た里と被申夫盤如
　何尓て能そ登豆州被申候得者甲州抜か希被
　致候節御申渡可有者我等御軍越堂類に其子
　として軍法破り候事不届也迚勘当被成候

このような吟味だと独り言を言って三町ほど引き取って備えを設けたところ、案の如く塀の裏から敵が打って出て、味方の先手が右往左往に崩れかかった。金右衛門は前の言葉に恥じて陣地を踏み張ると言ったものの、我が組は大方崩れてしまった。美濃は良い場所に人数を備えて少しも動かず、美濃の胴勢によって押さえたので、崩れかかった味方も踏みとどまって備えに堅固になったという。美濃は関ヶ原、大坂と数度の戦場を経験した人で、旧主上杉景勝の家人であった。島原の時分には九十余歳であったが、なるほど達者で老衰の気配もなく、五十ほどの人のように確かであったという。

『額波集』に曰く、島原一揆の時、松平伊豆守の息子甲斐守が抜け駆けして進み、高名を得ようとしたが、その沙汰にも及ばなかった。その頃、大久保彦左衛門が伊豆守に申し上げたのは「色々利口でいらっしゃいますが、武道はご案内でない」と申し上げた。それは何事かと伊豆守が申されると「それはご子息甲斐守が若い人の抜け駆けの手柄はあるが、貴方のなさり方は総じて暗闇の錦のようになった」と申し上げた。それはどういうことかと伊豆守が申されると「甲斐守が抜け駆けをなされた節、お申し渡しになるべきだった。我らがご軍に越堂類として、その子として軍法破りをしたことは不届きである」として勘当をなされた。

Because he held firm with his main force, the collapsing allied forces were able to regroup and strengthen their defenses. Mino was a person who had experienced numerous battles at Sekigahara and Osaka, and was a former retainer of his previous lord Uesugi Kagekatsu. At the time of Shimabara, he was over ninety years old, but was indeed vigorous with no signs of senility, appearing as robust as a person of about fifty.

The Gakuha-shū states that during the Shimabara Rebellion, Matsudaira Izu-no-kami's son Kai-no-kami attempted to charge ahead to gain military glory, but this did not come to pass. At that time, Ōkubo Hikozaemon said to Izu-no-kami: "You are clever in various ways, but you are not well-versed in military matters." When Izu-no-kami asked what he meant by this, he replied: "Your son Kai-no-kami may have shown the valor of a young man's charge, but your way of handling things has become like brocade in darkness." When Izu-no-kami asked what this meant, he said: "When Kai-no-kami made his charge, you should have given him orders. For us to serve in your army, and for his son to break military law is inexcusable," and he was placed under house arrest.
