　者々　上様聞召定而早速可被返召其時者
　甲州之誉もか具連須第一是所に者一子た
　里共依怙忠節無比類迚世上に茂可称歎
　ものをと被申しとかや流名豆州も至極して感

武辺雑談曰寛永十五年二月廿七日島原城落
　城之節紀州浪人山本市右衛門塀最早く付平
　塚勘兵衛跡ゟ来付矢鉄砲烈手負死人重而
　其時勘兵衛市右衛門に声を懸市右衛門遅く
　候与存如何市右衛門今来り多るかと嘲市右

　衛門不取敢今見多る登答る市右衛門塀下江
　早く付堂類を勘兵衛は遅く来と見笑故
　市右衛門如此答能返事也
兵家茶話曰寛永十五年二月廿七日肥前
　島原之城落て鍋島信濃守一番乗有前
　夜竹束弐三拾間敵に被取訳諸手皆是を聞
　而笑ひ嘲累といへ共信濃守少茂いと已須人
　数を密に繰出し籏を仕寄際に隠し置て松
　平伊豆守戸田左門石谷十蔵江軍使を遣し
　城中労連可働行無き虚を考候只今城を

現代語訳

「これは上様がお聞きになったら、きっとすぐに呼び戻されるでしょう。その時は甲斐守の誉れも完全なものになります。第一、ここには一子がいるのに、えこひいきをせず忠節は比類なきものとして、世間でも称賛されるべきものを」と申されたとか。さすがの伊豆守も至極もっともだと感心されたという。

『武辺雑談』に曰く、寛永十五年二月二十七日、島原城落城の節、紀州の浪人山本市右衛門が塀に最も早く取り付いた。平塚勘兵衛は後から来て取り付いたが、矢や鉄砲が激しく、手負いや死人が重なった。その時、勘兵衛が市右衛門に声をかけ「市右衛門は遅かったと思うがどうか。市右衛門は今来たのか」と嘲った。市右衛門は取り合わず「今見えた」と答えた。市右衛門は塀下に早く取り付いたが、勘兵衛は遅く来たと見て笑ったので、市右衛門はこのように答えた。良い返事である。
