were struck down at that place, and Yamada Shōbei, having achieved military merit, immediately committed seppuku on the spot. Also, it was heard that within the castle, ammunition was exhausted and their strength had weakened, but among our allies there were also excessive casualties and deaths, and it seems there was some fighting among allies as well. With innocent men standing firm like rocks while various armies clashed in confusion, and tens of thousands of firearms firing from all directions, it is reasonable that there should be talk that for those burning with anger, even fighting among allies is not a matter of great concern. According to the Shimabara Chronicle, at the time of the castle's fall, when Arima Saemon-no-suke rode into the main keep and looked around, there was already someone who had planted a banner within the bailey. When he asked who it was, they replied it was Mizuno Hyūga-no-kami's first rider, and that he himself was the banner officer. At that time Sakin'go (Arima Saemon-no-suke) said, "In what province was Hyūga-no-kami stationed? The first to enter was myself. Even if only a banner is brought in, can it be called 'first rider' unless one personally follows through? What presumptuous words you speak!" When he became angry, that banner officer stubbornly argued back, so he grabbed Saemon-no-suke's chest and pressed him against the wall. During this time, Hyūga-no-kami rode in, and somehow the situation was calmed. After the castle's fall, before Daiyūin-sama (Tokugawa Iemitsu), Sakin'go reported: "This time within Shimabara Castle, Hyūga-no-kami's banner officer manhandled me, and as he spoke too excessively, there was nothing I could do. That man...
