一代官所にて下役に召仕ふ人をサウタといふ是は日本の足軽（アシカル）の様なる物也
又カサカといふ者有是は小人同心の様なる物也此者とも脇指のやう成る
もの壱本指也さやは獣の皮毛のはへたるまゝにて用高官の人は
釼（ケン）を壱本さす也金銀作り美を尽したる珍物也
一女は上下ともに耳に輪をかける也金銀の細工も有水昌（スイシヤウ）石色々の細工
あり至而珍物なり
一女は髪へ油を付けすくる〳〵と巻揚け小風呂敷の様なる物にて頭を
つゝみ居る也此かむり風呂敷色々の織物にて高官の人程うつくしき
織物也
一私とも仲間之内儀兵衛と申者金主をもと求利分けにして商致也其外の者共
思ひ〳〵得手勝手に以或は家普請の日 雇（ヤトイ）人足遠方へ行て漁師（リヤウシ）の手間
をとり賃銭とる也伴太夫は網（アミ）を作り此賃代を取る也網は日本と
同し浮木は丸し如斯の事共をいたし八ヶ年の内暮す也代官より
扶持方は其日に間に合候程は被下候得とも衣類を着用可致限無之
如斯の業をいたし居候事
一寒中は惣身に獣の皮を着し天窓（アタマ）より顔まて狐（キツネ）の皮をかむり目鼻（メハナ）
計穴をあけ寒気を凌（シノグ）也翌年 春（ハル）夏之頃は段々長閑になり候
節 眼（マナゴ）口の淵鼻の先なと寒に当り色黒く成りて朽（クヂ）候故薬を
せんじぬりて其 愁（ウレ）ひを除（ノゾク）事妙也

一、代官所にて下役に召し使う人を「サウタ」という。これは日本の足軽のような者である。また「カサカ」という者がある。これは小人同心のような者である。この者どもは脇指のような物を一本差している。鞘は獣の皮で毛の生えたままで用いている。高官の人は剣を一本差している。金銀作りで美を尽くした珍しい物である。
一、女は身分の上下に関わらず耳に輪をかけている。金銀の細工もあり、水晶や色々な石の細工があり、とても珍しい物である。
一、女は髪に油を付けず、くるくると巻き上げて、小風呂敷のような物で頭を包んでいる。このかぶり物の風呂敷は色々な織物でできており、高官の人ほど美しい織物である。
一、私ども仲間の内、儀兵衛という者は元手を求めて利益を分けて商売をしている。その他の者どもは思い思いに得手勝手に、ある者は家の普請の日雇い人足をし、遠方へ行って漁師の手間を取り賃金を取る。伴太夫は網を作り、この賃金を取る。網は日本と同じだが浮木は丸い。このような事をして八ヶ年の間暮らしている。代官より扶持米はその日に間に合う程度は下されるけれども、衣類を着用するには限りがないので、このような仕事をしている次第である。
一、寒中は全身に獣の皮を着て、頭から顔まで狐の皮をかぶり、目と鼻だけ穴を開けて寒気をしのいでいる。翌年春夏の頃は段々のどかになる頃、目や口の淵、鼻の先などが寒に当たって色黒くなって腐るので、薬を煎じて塗ってその憂いを除くことは巧妙である。
一、家の内で寒気をしのぐには、座敷一間一間に長さ一間半程、横六尺程、高さ五尺程の

One: Women do not apply oil to their hair but wind it up in curls and wrap their heads with something like a small furoshiki cloth. These head-covering furoshiki are made of various textiles, with higher-ranking officials wearing more beautiful fabrics.
One: Among our group, a man named Gihei seeks capital to share profits in trade. The other men do as they please according to their abilities - some work as day laborers on house construction, others go to distant places to work as fishing assistants and earn wages. Bandayu makes nets and earns money from this. The nets are the same as in Japan, but the floats are round. We have lived for eight years doing such work. Although the magistrate provides daily rice rations sufficient for each day, there is no limit to clothing expenses, so we engage in such work.
One: In winter, we wear animal hides over our entire bodies and cover our heads and faces with fox fur, making holes only for eyes and nose to ward off the cold. The following year, around spring and summer when it gradually becomes milder, our eyes, mouth edges, and nose tips turn black and rot from exposure to cold, so we boil medicine and apply it to remove this affliction - a skillful remedy.
