イリカウツカに居候か是をしらす夫よりトボウリツカといへる所へ
出るなり
一トホウリツカ ヲロシヤ代官支配也
一此所に一時半ほと居候ゆへ委しき事はしらす獣の皮極上之物多く出る
所也といふ家数弐千軒程有此所ゟ清太夫清蔵病気にてイリカウ
ツカへ帰りたる所なり
一ベリマ 同断支配也
一此所にて炭（スミ）を焼（ヤク）なり其炭は石を焼炭とする也珍敷事とも也
私とも仲間の銀十郎と申者はしかを病み行く事の不叶とて此所に
置申し候此者壱人 夢（ユメ）にも見す噺にも聞さる庚の国に常ならぬ
身にもあらす病人ものを独（ヒト）り残す事のいと哀（アハレ）に思ひ れとも
逗留する事も不叶 互（タガイ）に声を上け袖をぬらし別れけると也

一此所家数千軒ほと有此道中帝王より大念御用にて昼夜無嫌
宿継を以通り候故何れの村々にても其所へ着せぬ前に人馬を集（アツ）め
待居候と見得着則不隙取出立也是は先 触（ブレ）之首尾合なり居候と
聞得けるなり此所の事も委敷事しらす

所であるという。家数二千軒程ある。この所から清太夫・清蔵が病気でイリカウ
ツカへ帰ったのである。

この所で炭を焼くのである。その炭は石を焼いて炭とするのである。珍しいことである。
私ども仲間の銀十郎という者は病気を患い、行くことができないとしてこの所に
残した。この者一人、夢にも見ず話にも聞かない異国の地で、普通でない
身でもないのに病人を一人残すことがとても哀れに思われたけれども、
逗留することもできず、互いに声を上げて袖を濡らして別れたということである。

この所は家数千軒ほどある。この道中、帝王より大変重要な御用で昼夜を問わず
宿継ぎで通るため、どの村々でもその所へ着く前に人馬を集めて
待っているように見えた。着くとすぐに休まず取って出立するのである。これは事前の触れの
段取りによるものであると聞いた。この所のことも詳しいことは知らない。

At this place, they burn coal. The coal is made by burning stones into coal. This is quite remarkable. One of our companions named Ginjūrō fell ill and could not continue the journey, so we left him at this place. Leaving this one person alone in a foreign land that we had never seen in dreams nor heard of in stories - though he was not in any unusual condition other than being sick - felt deeply sorrowful to us. However, since we could not stay, we raised our voices and wet our sleeves with tears as we parted.

This place has about one thousand houses. During this journey, because it was urgent imperial business traveling day and night with post-horse relays, it appeared that in every village they would gather horses and men and wait before we arrived.
