恭しく図のごとく箱を目八分目に持参し、百官の前に置き直し、小口元の撞木をくるくると回したところ、この箱の内で尺八、胡弓、琴、琵琶の音を奏でるので、皆同じ音に声を張り上げて歌った。まことに箱の内にはどのような仕掛けがあるのか、総じてこの国の細工は妙なことで、人間の細工のようではなく、妙なることばかりである。

一、私どもがイルクーツクに八年居住している間、同所へ帰すという沙汰もこれまでないのはいかなることかと通訳の者に尋ねたところ、八年の内に日本へ帰すことの吟味がないのは、今の帝王の親君がとても病身の人で、国の掟さえ構わず、況してや他の国の人を帰すべき吟味に取り組むこともなく、これまで放置されていることである。
一、今の帝王の祖母君は女帝で、国民を憐れんだ。伊勢の国の船頭幸太夫が船で流されてきて、日本へ帰国することを願ったところ、早速お聞き届けになり、右の幸太夫と水主ともに三人を松前まで送り届けてくださった。この理由はいかなることかというと、日本人を送り届けるのは、その志を基として日本と親交を結び、日本の米穀をロシアの産物と交易しようとして送り届けたことと聞いている。しかるに御逝去なされた親君の代になって、日本と親しくなり米穀の交易等も思いつかず、日本の人を本国へ送り届ける沙汰もなかったので、頼りにならず放置されたことだという。然るに今の帝王は国の政治を基とする人であるので、日本と親交を結び米穀を求めて我が国民の糧の乏しきを救おうと俄に思い立ち、船を用意して日本へ送り届ける評議が決まったということである。今の帝王はその頃、日本の歴代に

They respectfully brought a box about eight-tenths full as shown in the diagram, placed it before all the officials, and turned the striker at the small opening round and round. 1. During the eight years we resided in Irkutsk, there had been no word about returning us there, so we asked the interpreter what this meant. He replied that the reason there had been no consideration of returning us to Japan during these eight years was that the current emperor's father was very sickly and did not even attend to the country's laws, much less approach the matter of considering the return of people from other countries, so we had been neglected until now.
