小さな帆を三本立てて操船していたので、私どももその様子を理解した。元の船の帆柱が一本立てか二本立てかということであろうか。いずれにしても日本の船は一本立てなので、立ててみせよということで一本立ててみせると、その男はうなずいて「日本か」と言った。ようやくこの時、一言言葉を交わすことができた。それ以降、その男はますます親切に世話をしてくれ、同じ六月十三日、その男が伝馬船に乗り、私ども十五人が同船して、オロシア（ロシア）人のいる所へ案内をし、オロシアから来た商人船のいる所へ向かった。同月二十二日に出船した。
