良質なものは蝦夷地にかけても稀である。まして津軽・南部の檜山は残らず伐り尽くして、今伐り出している所の檜は皆檜葉という木で、檜ではない。蝦夷地には蝦夷松という一種があり、檜に類している。この材がある山は所々にある。これもまた他国にない材である。江戸の飛騨屋久兵衛という山師が蝦夷地の松山を請け負い、今盛んに伐り出して江戸・大坂へ積み回し、今は檜の代わりにこれを用いている。江戸では献上台・障子・曲物等に用いる所、木目が細かくて筋目が通り、檜よりも美しい。また大葉五葉松があり、蝦夷松よりは劣るといっても良材である。雑木にはトドマツ・オンコという木があり、樅の類である。

梅・栓・桂・栃・朴木・榎・黄柏等が多い。竹はなく、矢竹ばかりである。土地は広大であるが寒国で生物が少ないためか、草木・禽獣・魚類まで本邦にないものが多い。

Good quality timber is rare even throughout Ezo territory. Moreover, the cypress mountains of Tsugaru and Nambu have been completely cut down, and what is now being harvested as "cypress" is actually a wood called hinoki-ba (cypress leaf), which is not true cypress. In Ezo territory there is a species called Ezo pine, which is similar to cypress. Mountains with this timber are found in various places. This is also timber not found in other provinces. A timber merchant from Edo named Hidaya Kyūbei has contracted the pine mountains of Ezo territory and is now actively harvesting and shipping to Edo and Osaka, using this as a substitute for cypress. In Edo, it is used for ceremonial platforms, sliding doors, bent-wood containers, etc. The wood grain is fine with straight patterns, more beautiful than cypress. There is also large-leaf five-needle pine, which, though inferior to Ezo pine, is still good timber. Among miscellaneous trees are Todomatsu and Onko, which are types of fir.

There are many plum, sen, katsura, horse chestnut, magnolia, hackberry, yellow bark, etc. There is no bamboo, only arrow bamboo. Though the land is vast, perhaps because it is a cold country with little biological activity, there are many plants, birds and beasts, and fish that do not exist in mainland Japan.

One: Among the trade goods of Sōya, brocade and blue gems are brought from Karafuto Island. The general name of Karafuto Island is Taraikai, an island with a circumference of about 300 ri. The southwestern sea area of this island has shallow waters like a marsh, and the tide is also thick and heavy, making navigation difficult. On the western side there are large reeds about two shaku tall, and coconuts that wash ashore are collected and sometimes given to Matsumae merchants.
