一 ハホロ西海にて四十里の砂浜也海より砂金あかる事
是も余国に比類なき事也此浜西南に海を請たる
地故春夏東南の風には波あれなくして秋冬
西風のあれには大洋より波濤を押あくる故此時
海底の砂金を岡へ打揚る也春夏とても大荒あり
たる翌日は砂金上り一帯黄色なりといへり此地真向に
西を請て外にさへきるものなき故沖にて破船の道
具等此浜へ寄る其道具の内見知さる品々あり又
大木なとも寄る事有て是又不見知木も有なれハ
異国より来る物共と見ゆるとなり松前より是迄

多し或者云けるは惣して国は東南を前とし西北を

うしろなりといひける然共此ハホロ極寒の地にて中々
住居成へき地にあらす草木魚鼈まて少き故蝦夷
人たるも住セす前々砂金取に冬こもりセし者もあり
けれとも多くハ寒気にたへす死亡セり死セさるものも
松前へ帰りては病者に成て廃人になりしとなり

一 ハホロは西海にあって四十里の砂浜である。海から砂金が上がることは、これも他国に比類のないことである。この浜は西南に海に面した土地であるので、春夏の東南の風には波が荒れることなく、秋冬の西風の荒れには大洋から波濤を押し上げるので、この時海底の砂金を岡へ打ち上げるのである。春夏であっても大荒れがあった翌日は砂金が上がり、一帯が黄色になると言われている。この地は真正面に西を向いて、外に遮るものがないので、沖で破船した道具等がこの浜へ寄る。その道具の内には見知らない品々がある。また大木なども寄ることがあって、これまた見知らない木もあるので、異国から来る物どもと見えるとのことである。松前からここまで

海上百六十里である。この辺りからソウヤまでの間は山が少なく平原が多い。ある者が言うには、総じて国は東南を前とし西北を後ろとするものが多い。この国はそうではなく、西北に平坦な地が多く居住に良い。東南はことごとく山々でしかも崎や絶壁のすさまじい景色なので、今の松前は国の後ろであると言った。しかしながら、このハホロは極寒の地でとても住居になるべき地ではない。草木や魚類まで少ないので蝦夷人でも住まない。以前砂金取りに冬籠もりした者もあったけれども、多くは寒気に耐えず死亡した。死ななかった者も松前へ帰っては病者になって廃人になったとのことである。
