魚がいる。形は海鷂魚（エイ）のようである。腹内に油わたがあって、蝦夷人の珍味とする所である。キナホウを獲ると腹を割いて油わたを取り、その代わりにイナオイを入れて海へ放す。そうすると死ぬことはない。死なないということは、腹内にイナオイのあるキナホウを度々獲ったことがあるからである。イナオイとは木を削りかけて人の形のように作ったもので、これは蝦夷の船魂で神のように渇仰するものである。西海には変わった魚はいない。鯨は多い。これも春夏は南海へ出て、秋から冬は北海へ帰るのである。一説によると冬中はタライカイの沼に隠れ居て、春は南へ出る。それ故背に

There is a fish whose form is like that of a sea ray (ei). It has oil intestines in its belly, which are considered a delicacy by the Ainu people. When they catch a Kinahō, they cut open its belly to take the oil intestines, and in their place put an inaohi and release it back into the sea. Then it does not die. The proof that it doesn't die is that they have frequently caught Kinahō with inaohi in their bellies. Inaohi are made by whittling wood into human-like forms, and these are boat spirits of the Ainu that they revere like gods. In the western sea there are no unusual fish. Whales are numerous. These also go out to the southern sea in spring and summer, and return to the northern sea from autumn through winter. there are said to be oysters growing. When looking at large whales floating in the distance, their backs already appear white. This is said to be because oysters have grown there. Also, cranes, chickens, wild geese and the like return north in spring. In the marshes of the deep mountains of Ezo territory, summer birds also lurk in the shade of the shores and live in groups. When passing through the large and small marshes of Mount Uchiwake during the summer heat period, cranes, chickens, ducks and others were living in groups. It is said there are even more in the marshes of Shiribetsu and Shikotsu.

One: The reason rice cultivation is not done in Matsumae may be because it is a cold country and unsuited to the land, or because the rice planting season conflicts with the herring fishing season, so from ancient times no one has attempted cultivation. Recently people from Tsugaru came and tried planting a little at a place called Oyobe, and the growth was quite good.
