古へ過たる計りにて実のらす又亀田といふ所にても心見
けれともさのことくなる故其後稲は出来さるものに成て
又心見るものもなし畢竟霜の降事早き故歟米不自
由はなき故心を尽すものなき故か不不出来といふ事ある
へきや津軽も以前は松前のことくに米不出来国たるへし
今の弘前より外か浜へかけてこと〳〵く平田と成しは
久しからさる事のよし外か浜の内北海の辺は皆新田
にて米能出来る故山間まて田地と成しなり惣して
新田開発の場所早く利を思ふ時はならす当前は
実のらさる心持にて取かゝらされは成就なりかたし

一年心見て不出来故土地に合すと決定する事有へからす
米のみならす麦も出来さるものにして作らすありけるを去
年早麦の種を三ヶ所に心見つれは成程能出来実法て
また〳〵帰路の時其種持来しなり粟稗蕎麦大豆
小豆等にても畠にこやしせすまきおろしたるはかりにて
相応に実のれり茄子瓜なとも能出来る也惣して
草立は余国に倍して繁茂するは土地よろしきゆへ
にや又雪にて押れ陽気一時に発する故にや虎杖蓬
なとは一丈余りにのひたる所あり馬にて通るに枝葉其
上をおほひて鞭を以て打払〳〵通る所あり款冬

昔より（稲は）育ちすぎるばかりで実がならない。また亀田というところでも試みたが、同様の結果であったため、その後稲は出来ないものとなって、また試みる者もいない。畢竟、霜の降りることが早いためであろうか。米が不自由でないため、心を尽くす者がいないためであろうか。出来ないということがあるべきだろうか（本当に出来ないのであろうか）。津軽も以前は松前のように米が出来ない国であったに違いない。今の弘前より外ヶ浜にかけて、ことごとく平田となったのは、それほど遠い昔のことではないということである。外ヶ浜のうち北海の辺りは皆新田であって、米がよく出来るため、山間まで田地となったのである。総じて新田開発の場所において、早く利益を求めようとすると成らない。当面は実らないつもりで取りかからなければ成就しがたい。

一年試みて不出来だからといって、土地に合わないと決定すべきではない。米のみならず麦も出来ないものとして作らずにいたところ、去年早麦の種を三ヶ所で試みたところ、なるほどよく出来て実ったので、また帰路の時にその種を持ち帰ってきた。粟・稗・蕎麦・大豆・小豆等であっても、畑に肥やしもせず蒔き下ろしただけで相応に実った。茄子・瓜なども よく出来る。総じて草の育ちは他国に倍して繁茂するのは、土地が良いためであろうか。また雪に押さえられ、陽気が一時に発するためであろうか。虎杖・蓬などは一丈余り（約三メートル以上）に伸びた所があり、馬で通るに枝葉が上を覆って、鞭でもって打ち払い打ち払い通るところがある。款冬（ふきのとう）

From ancient times, (the rice) has grown too vigorously but failed to set grain. At a place called Kameda, they also tried, but with similar results, and so rice came to be regarded as impossible to cultivate there, and no one attempted it again. Ultimately, this may be because the frost comes early. Or perhaps it is because rice is not scarce, so no one puts in full effort. But should it truly be said that it cannot be grown? Tsugaru too, in former times, must have been a country where rice could not be produced, just as Matsumae. The fact that the area from present-day Hirosaki all the way to Sotogahama has become entirely paddy fields is not something that happened long ago. Within Sotogahama, the areas near the northern sea are all newly reclaimed fields, and since rice grows well there, even the mountain valleys have been turned into rice paddies. In general, when attempting to develop new rice fields, if one seeks profit too quickly, it will not succeed. Unless one takes up the work with the mindset that crops will not ripen for the time being, it will be difficult to achieve success.

One should not conclude that the land is unsuitable just because the crops fail after one year of trial. Not only rice, but wheat too had been considered impossible to grow and was left uncultivated; however, when early wheat seeds were tried at three locations last year, they grew remarkably well and bore grain, and when returning home, those seeds were brought back. Even crops such as millet, barnyard millet, buckwheat, soybeans, and adzuki beans bore adequate yields simply by being sown without any fertilizing of the fields. Eggplants and melons also grow well. In general, the way grasses grow is doubly vigorous compared to other regions — perhaps because the land is fertile, or perhaps because the plants are held down by snow and then the warmth erupts all at once in a burst. Japanese knotweed and mugwort have grown to over one jō (approximately three meters) in some places, and when passing through on horseback, the branches and leaves cover overhead, and one must beat them aside with a whip while passing through.
