（款冬＝フキは）大きなものがあり、普通に見られるものでも葉の大きさが三尺（約90センチ）ほどもあるだろう。蝦夷地にはさらに大きなものがあって、五・六尺（約150〜180センチ）ほどの葉があると言われている。蕨・自然薯は沢山ある。野生のゴボウ・ニンジンも多い。薬草の類は（筆者は）見分けられないと言っても、附子・黄精については土地の者も見知っており、多くある。
一 城下（松前城下）に大松前・小松前と並んでいずれも船着き場がある。松前より西方十八里に江指（えさし）という所があり、諸国の廻り船が入り込んで、松前第一の繁盛の地である。入り込む国々は、津軽・南部・秋田・酒田・加賀・能登・越後・越前・佐渡、その他大坂の船も来て、肥前からは瀬戸物の類を積んでくることもある。さてこの江指に一昨年（去々年）、変わったことがあった。

In Ezo, there are said to be even larger ones, with leaves of five to six shaku (approximately 150–180 cm) across. Bracken fern and wild yam are plentiful. Wild burdock and wild carrots are also abundant. As for medicinal herbs, (the author) cannot identify them all by sight, but aconite and Solomon's seal are recognized by the local people, and are found in great quantities.
One entry: In the castle town (of Matsumae), there are docking areas at both Ō-Matsumae and Ko-Matsumae. Eighteen ri (approximately 70 km) to the west of Matsumae is a place called Esashi, where merchant vessels from various provinces call in, making it the most prosperous place in all of Matsumae domain. The provinces whose ships come in include Tsugaru, Nanbu, Akita, Sakata, Kaga, Noto, Echigo, Echizen, and Sado; furthermore, ships from Osaka also come, and sometimes vessels from Hizen arrive loaded with porcelain and pottery. Now, two years ago, a remarkable event occurred at this Esashi.

Rain had continued falling from the beginning of the seventh month, and it finally cleared around the twentieth day. On the twenty-sixth day, the weather was fair and clear, and the villagers went out to sea to gather kelp, making up for the work they had neglected during the long rainy days; men and women were gathered together along the shore. Around the Hour of the Sheep (approximately 2 p.m.), there was suddenly a trembling from the direction of the mountains, and people looked back wondering if it was thunder, but since it was a clear sky without a single cloud, they thought it strange. While they were watching with puzzlement, the coastline suddenly began to collapse, and in alarm and panic, people fled into the sea. At that moment, the rocks on the sea floor thrust themselves upward of their own accord, and an island appeared. Several men and women who had climbed up onto it were utterly terrified, their courage entirely failing them.
