はかりなり鶴の舞といふあり鶴の羽翼ひらきたる
体にて躍るなり折〳〵鶴の鳴声をまセて拍子を
とれり甚興に入面白き体なれとも本邦の者見ては
更におもしろからす上るりは仙台上るりの音にて
ゆるりと語りたるものなり尤はやめの所も有とみへて
声音をはりセめてかたる所もあり一様の酒なれハ
呑尽セるを期とす肴もいらす只のみに呑計り也
目見済てよりハ町々へも出て商ひをもする也遠蝦夷
は年々には来らす近蝦夷のみ春毎に来る也予か
旅宿へも蝦夷両人招き酒を呑セけるに歌をうたひ

波のよセくる見ゆる高き山へのほれハ波の音聞ゆると云

引続き謝礼として一人は嶋鳥の羽一尻一人はかいくしら
一掛持参セり来るに連立ては来らす銘々に来れり
是は東蝦夷松前より百二三十里シラヲイといふ所の蝦夷也
名はシラノコヲシムカといへり名を尋事其者に尋てハ答へ
さる法なり是か名は彼に聞彼か名は是に聞事なり此
二人は御身方蝦夷と申て松前にも功のあるもの也シヤク

ばかりである。鶴の舞というものがあり、鶴の羽翼を広げた様子で踊るのである。時折鶴の鳴き声を真似て拍子を取る。甚だ興に入って面白い様子であるが、本邦の者が見ては全く面白くない。浄瑠璃は仙台浄瑠璃の音調でゆっくりと語ったものである。もっとも早めの所もあると見えて、声音を張り詰めて語る所もある。一様の酒なので飲み尽くすまでを区切りとする。肴もいらず、ただ飲むだけである。拝謁が済んでからは町々へも出て商いもするのである。遠い蝦夷地の者は年々には来ず、近い蝦夷地の者のみが春ごとに来るのである。私の旅宿へもアイヌ二人を招き、酒を飲ませたところ、歌を歌った

and so forth. There is what is called the "crane dance," where they dance in the manner of a crane spreading its wings. Occasionally they imitate the cry of cranes and keep time. It is quite entertaining and interesting in its way, but when people from Japan proper watch it, they find it completely uninteresting. The joruri is performed in the tone of Sendai joruri, narrated slowly. However, there seem to be fast parts as well, where they stretch their voices taut while reciting. Since it is ordinary sake, they make it their rule to drink until it is all consumed. They need no appetizers, just drinking alone. After the audience is completed, they also go out to the town quarters to engage in trade. Those from distant Ezo lands do not come every year; only those from nearby Ezo come each spring. I also invited two Ainu to my lodging and gave them sake to drink, whereupon they sang songs.

So I asked the interpreter about the words of the song, and he said they repeatedly sing about "when you climb a high mountain, you can see the waves rolling in; when you ascend a high mountain, you can hear the sound of the waves." After the drinking was finished and they returned home, they subsequently brought gifts of gratitude - one brought a bundle of seabird feathers, the other brought a string of shells. When they came, they did not come together but arrived separately. These are Ainu from a place called Shiraoi in eastern Ezo, about 120-130 ri from Matsumae. Their names are Shiranoko and Oshimuka. Regarding asking about names, it is their custom not to answer when asked directly. You ask him about this one's name, and ask this one about that one's name. These two are called "loyal retainer Ainu" and are people who have rendered service to Matsumae. During Shakushain's rebellion, they did not join the insurgents but remained loyal to Matsumae.
