初けるにや此文句を翻訳セは大略知るへきなれとも
夷語に能通セし通詞なし又文字なしといへとももの毎

入事あれハ彼結ひたる縄ときさある木なと出して去年

一村の者なれハ足跡を見て是を知る更に見違ひなし
又忍ふ事上手にて禽獣を射るに草莽の中を

セしものとも残らす菰に包み同所に置り家は焚て

用意は予め心懸置となり死者の婦はかふりものを
して面をあらわさゝる事凡三年又再ひ嫁セすといへり

始められたのだろうか。この文句を翻訳すれば大略知ることができるだろうが、アイヌ語に精通した通訳がいない。また文字はないと言うけれども、物事を覚えておくには縄を結んで置いたり、あるいは木に刻みを付けて置いて心覚えとする。何年経ってもこの心覚えを忘れることがない。商船が蝦夷地へ至って勘定の入り組んだ事があれば、彼らは結んだ縄や刻みのある木などを出して、去年のことも詳細に弁別するのである。往古の結縄の意もこのようなものであろうか。物覚えが良いのみならず、物を見るのも鋭いことがある。一村の者であれば足跡を見てそれを知る。全く見違いがない。また忍ぶことが上手で、禽獣を射るのに草むらの中を這い回り腹ばいになって近寄るが、禽獣は全く気づくことがない。

When merchant ships arrive in Ezo territory and there are complicated accounting matters, they bring out the ropes they tied and wood with notches to distinguish even last year's affairs in detail. The ancient meaning of quipu (knotted cords) was probably like this. Not only is their memory good, but they are also sharp at observing things. If they are from the same village, they can identify someone by their footprints. There is absolutely no mistaking them. When there is a sick person, even fathers and sons, brothers abandon them, flee to the mountains, and leave them to die. The treatment of the dead is to dress them in new attush, wrap them in new straw mats, and bury them in the mountains. Their treasured possessions are also wrapped in straw and placed in the same location. The house is burned down, and the household members build a new house elsewhere. Even in their prime years, they keep death preparations in mind beforehand. The wife of the deceased wears a head covering and does not show her face for about three years, and is said not to remarry.
