ヤウの木の幹を丸削りにして弦は藤蔓の心を以て

付たり鏃は木を削りて用又石を焼ても用ゆ鏃に毒を

なり振反りて発つなり鏃に刃鉄を以作りしもたし
なみに秘蔵セり此方より渡したるにはあらす出刃をあら
砥にておろし鏃に作たる物なり又魚を突にヤスを以てし

業とし自然と妙を得たり海底を行魚を見付二丈計底へ

道徳は甚だ慎み深い。蝦夷人の習いで、身上の良い者ほど女房を多く持っている。女房が五人あれば五ヶ所に住居し、事があるときには集まって共々に夫を助けて、付き合いも睦まじいと言われている。出産をするのも自分自身で取り扱い、他人の手を借らず、出産の気配があると横になって安産し、直ちに海へ入って子を洗い、また汚れた物なども全て洗う。全く血の穢れに触れることも、その子の出産で煩うこともないのである。
一 男は半弓と毒矢を持つ。弓の長さは五尺ほど。オンコまたはオヒヤウの木の幹を丸削りにして、弦は藤蔓の芯を撚り合わせてこれを用いる。強弓で微力の者は引くことができない。

日本人が肩を入れることはできない。矢は三尺ほどの矢竹に真羽を二枚付けてある。鏃は木を削って用い、また石を焼いても用いる。鏃に毒を塗り付ける。禽獣を射るのに狙いを定めることなく、的を定めて即座に放つ。全く外すことなく、よく当たる。大方は後ろ向きになり、振り返って発つのである。鏃に刃鉄を以って作ったものもあり、並々ならず秘蔵している。こちら（和人側）から渡したものではなく、出刃包丁を荒砥石で研いで鏃に作ったものである。また魚を突くのにヤスを用い、槍のようにして常にこれを手放さない。この所作は甚だ得意とするところで、初めから業とし自然と妙技を得ている。海底を行く魚を見つけ、二丈ほどの底へヤスを投げ突くのに外すということがない。大亀・鮫・海獣

Their moral conduct is extremely prudent. According to Ainu custom, the more prosperous a man is, the more wives he has. If he has five wives, they live in five different places, and when there are matters to attend to, they gather together to help their husband, and their relationships are said to be harmonious. Even in childbirth, women handle everything themselves without borrowing others' hands. When labor begins, they lie on their side and give birth easily, then immediately enter the sea to wash the child and also wash all the soiled things. They never suffer from blood defilement or complications during childbirth.
One: Men carry half-bows and poisoned arrows. The bow length is about five shaku (approximately 5 feet). They round-carve the trunk of onko or ohiyau trees, and for the bowstring they twist together the core of wisteria vines. It is such a strong bow that those with little strength cannot draw it.

Japanese cannot provide assistance with drawing. The arrows are about three shaku long, made of arrow bamboo with two true feathers attached. Arrowheads are made by carving wood, and sometimes by firing stone. They coat the arrowheads with poison. When shooting birds and beasts, they do not take careful aim but fix on the target and release immediately. They never miss and hit precisely. Generally, they face backward, turn around, and shoot. Some arrowheads are made with iron blades, which they treasure extraordinarily. These are not given by our side (the Japanese), but are made into arrowheads by grinding kitchen knives on rough whetstones. For spearing fish, they use fish spears like lances and never let go of them. This technique is their great specialty - they have made it their profession from the beginning and naturally acquired mastery.
