にて度々里へ出て馬を取故鉄砲にて打留共打所

毒薬は奇妙の事なり又タイマツフといふもの有獣の

其上に二人又竹鑓を持て居馬を喰ふ時左右より脇腹へ
四本竹鑓を突込上より二本肩へさし入けるに其熊事とも
せすして両の手にて左右四本の鑓をかなくり捨立かゝり
厩の上の八寸角を両手にて投捨ける故六人の者とも逃去
けり翌朝其跡を見れは血の引たる跡山中まて有けるといへり
熊の皮を見るに長さ九尺あり立たる所は一丈四五尺も有へし

Taking a horse is easier for them than a cat catching a mouse - they break the neck and sling it over their shoulder to carry into the mountains. At a place called Otobe, when a bear was targeting horses and coming to a house nightly, the villagers positioned four men on each side of the horse, each holding bamboo spears, and laid eight-inch square timbers on top of the stable with two more men holding bamboo spears positioned there. When the bear was eating the horse, they thrust four bamboo spears into its flanks from both sides and drove two into its shoulders from above, but the bear acted as if nothing had happened, swept away the four spears on both sides with its paws, reared up, and threw off the eight-inch square timbers from the stable roof with both hands, causing all six men to flee. The next morning when they examined the scene, they found a trail of blood leading all the way into the mountains. Looking at the bear's hide, it was nine feet long, and when standing, it would probably be fourteen or fifteen feet tall.
