藤島とも不覚いつくの地にか着けると心細く覚けるに

藤島とも分からず、一体どこの土地に着いたのかと心細く思っていると、鶴よりもさらに大きな鳥が岩陰から飛び去った。あれは何という鳥かと尋ねると、鵜という鳥だという。鵜は見慣れた鳥だが、雨風のために大きく見えたのである。総じて海上での困難は、暴風は言うまでもなく、また雲霧に遭った時に破船に及ぶことである。

Not recognizing it as Fujishima, I felt anxious wondering what land we had arrived at, when a bird larger than a crane flew away from behind the rocks. When I asked what kind of bird that was, they said it was a cormorant. Though cormorants are familiar birds, it appeared large due to the rain and wind. Generally speaking, difficulties at sea include not only storms but also shipwrecks when encountering fog.
1. Matsumae and Ezo form one country and are connected by land. The area called Matsumae domain extends about sixty ri, with Kumaishi to the west and Kameda to the east. There are barrier stations at both these locations, and beyond them is considered Ezo territory. At these places, travel is inspected and going to Ezo territory without reason is prohibited. behind it. Houses line up for about one ri east to west, but the area is narrow north to south. The castle is built in manor style with two turrets. On both sides of the main entrance are the residences of retainers.

There are public notice boards in three places in the castle town:
1. Those coming to Matsumae from various provinces are strictly prohibited from trading directly with the Ainu people.
1. If there are those who cross to Matsumae without proper reason to engage in trade, this must be immediately reported.
Note: Regarding the Ainu people, even concerning travel, wherever it may be, it depends on their intentions.
