今は三十五ヶ寺となる○首里（すり）の三大寺といへるは。
天王寺。天界寺。円覚寺をいふ。王廟（わうびやう）は真味志（まわし）
安里村（あんざとむら）にあり。今は新（あらた）に堂社（だうしや）を建（たつ）るを禁（きん）ず。
○国中（こくちう）たはれたる風位【風俗？】にて。女人（をんな）の嫁（か）せざる前（まへ）は
生平（つね）に男子（をとこ）と交（まじは）り遊（あそ）び。市町（いちまち）など手をとりて
遊（たはれ）行（ある）く。更（さら）にこれを恥（はづか）しとせず。両親（ふたおや）もまた咎（とが）めず。
これ一奇（ひとつ）の国俗（ならはし）也。然（さ）れども嫁（よめ）りて後（のち）は節（せつ）を守（まも）
りて。他（た）の男（をとこ）と同座（どうざ）だにせず。其（その）禁（いまし）めもその貞（てい）も。
あだし国（くに）の及（およ）ぶべきならず。《割書：もし国法を犯すものはきんまん｜もんのたゝりにてたちまちに》

○娼家（しやうか）の流行（はやり）うた

現代語訳
ことは、『琉球談』『琉球事略』『中山伝信録』などに詳しく記されている。
○寺院は臨済宗と真言宗（古儀）の二宗のみであって、全部で三十七ヶ寺であったが、久米の普門寺、西福寺が廃寺となって、今は三十五ヶ寺となっている。○首里の三大寺といわれるのは、天王寺、天界寺、円覚寺をいう。王廟は真和志安里村にある。今は新たに堂社を建てることを禁じている。
○国中がなまめかしい風俗であって、女性が嫁ぐ前は平生男性と交際し遊び、市町などで手をとって遊び歩く。まったくこれを恥ずかしいこととせず、両親もまた咎めない。これは一つの奇異な国の習俗である。しかしながら嫁いだ後は節操を守って、他の男性と同席することさえしない。その禁制もその貞操も、他国の及ぶところではない。（もし国法を犯す者は神仏の祟りによってたちまちに神罰を受けるが、早く懺悔して罪を訴え出れば祟りが消えるという）○国中に娼妓がはなはだ多い。歌女もいる（こちらでいう芸者である）。蛇皮線を弾いて国の歌を歌う。拍子がはなはだ面白いという。

○The temples belong only to the Rinzai and Shingon (ancient rites) sects, and there were thirty-seven temples in total, but with the closure of Fumon-ji and Saifuku-ji in Kume, there are now thirty-five temples. ○What are called the three great temples of Shuri are Tenno-ji, Tenkai-ji, and Engaku-ji. The royal mausoleum is located in Mawashi Anzato village. Now the construction of new temples and shrines is prohibited.
○The entire country has lascivious customs, and before women marry, they ordinarily associate and play with men, walking hand in hand through the markets and towns. They do not consider this shameful at all, and their parents do not reproach them either. This is one peculiar custom of the country. However, after marriage they maintain chastity and will not even sit together with other men. Their prohibitions and their chastity are beyond what other countries can match. (If someone violates the national laws, they immediately receive divine punishment through the curse of the gods and buddhas, but if they quickly confess and report their sins, the curse will be dispelled.)
○There are extremely many courtesans throughout the country. There are also singing girls (what we call geisha). They play the jabisen and sing the songs of the country. The rhythm is said to be very interesting.
