　兎角可申様無之刻朔日に相備申候其後拙
　者上使衆へ参明日城乗被仰付候由家老共
　被召寄被仰渡候通具に承候左様に候得は拙
　者持口浜之手之大手之口に而御座候先日
　廿日に押掛候刻も大手之口敵数多備を立罷
　在候由承候我等者共慥に見申たる由申候其者
　共之口とも直に可被成御聞候得与申候自然明日
　城江押掛候共塀へ乗込可申覚悟斗に而脇之
　用心まては罷成間敷候若切て出候はゝ我等者
　共塀へ取つき罷在候者敵を防候事罷成間敷

　候然は拙者油断之様に被思召候得は迷惑候脇
　を防可申と仕候はゝ城乗にをく連可申候如何仕
　可然候哉と尋申候得は内膳殿十蔵殿飛騨殿
　三郎左衛門殿被仰は我等申分一段尤に思召候是
　は一大事之事に而候惣人数城へ押上りせり合候
　内に敵切て出候はゝ味方は悉まけと成可申候左様
　に候得者天下之耻に而候間我等義は万事を差
　置浜之手に敵打出候を相待候得乗込候は須
　は敵も出間敷候味方乗入其上に而も敵出不申候は
　我等義は浜之手大手口ゟ押入可申由被仰渡候

現代語訳

とにかく申し様がない時刻に、元日に備えを整えた。その後私は上使衆のところへ参り「明日城攻めを仰せ付けられる由、家老共がお召し寄せられて申し渡されました通り、詳しく承りました。そういうことでありますれば、私の持ち口は浜の手の大手の口でございます。先日二十日に押し掛けた時も、大手の口に敵が数多く備えを立てて控えていると承りました。我らの者どもが確かに見申した由申しております。その者どもの口からも直接お聞きになれるでしょう」と申した。「もし明日城へ押し掛けても、塀へ乗り込む覚悟だけで、脇の用心までは手が回らないでしょう。もし（敵が）切って出てきたならば、我らの者どもが塀へ取り付いて控えている者は、敵を防ぐことができないでしょう。

そうなれば私が油断しているように思し召されては迷惑です。脇を防ごうとすれば、城攻めに遅れをとるでしょう。どのようにするのがよろしいでしょうか」と尋ね申したところ、内膳殿・十蔵殿・飛騨殿・三郎左衛門殿が仰せになるには「我らの申し分を一段ともっともに思し召す。これは一大事のことである。総人数が城へ押し上がって競り合っている最中に、敵が切って出てきたならば、味方は悉く負けとなるであろう。そういうことになれば天下の恥である。よって我らは万事を差し置いて、浜の手に敵が打って出てくるのを待っていよ。（味方が）乗り込めば、おそらく敵も出てこないであろう。味方が乗り入れた上でも敵が出てこなければ、我らは浜の手大手口から押し入るべし」と申し渡された。

In any case, there was no choice but to prepare for New Year's Day at that late hour. Afterward, I went to the senior officials and said, "I have been informed in detail, as you told the chief retainers when you summoned them, that tomorrow we will be ordered to attack the castle. In that case, my assigned position is at the main gate of the beach approach. When we attacked on the 20th the other day, I heard that many enemies had positioned their defenses at the main gate. Our men say they saw this clearly with their own eyes. You can hear directly from those men as well." "Even if we attack the castle tomorrow, we will only be focused on climbing over the walls, and we won't be able to spare attention for guarding the flanks. If (the enemy) makes a sortie, our men who are clinging to the walls won't be able to defend against the enemy.

In that case, I would be troubled if you thought I was being negligent. If I try to defend the flanks, I will fall behind in the castle assault. What would be the best course of action?" When I asked this, Lord Naizen, Lord Jūzō, Lord Hida, and Lord Saburōzaemon said, "We find your concerns entirely reasonable. This is a matter of great importance. If the enemy makes a sortie while all our forces are pushing up against the castle in fierce combat, our entire army will be defeated. If that happens, it will be a disgrace to the realm. Therefore, we will set aside all other matters and wait at the beach approach for the enemy to sally forth. If (our forces) climb into (the castle), the enemy probably won't come out. Even after our forces enter, if the enemy still doesn't emerge, we will push in through the main gate of the beach approach."
