　間得其意罷帰候馬場榊原其後被申候は肥後
　之人数参候而居申候浜之手は大事之所に而候
　間肥後之人数をも指加可申候と被申候間拙者申
　候は初ゟ申請候持口其上大事之所とて脇へ渡
　し候事迷惑に存候先手を城へ乗旗本は自
　然敵打て出候は防き可申由申候得は我等若気
　に而左様に申候大事之所に而候に一手に而城をも乗
　打て出候はゝ敵をも防き可申なとゝ申儀尤一分之
　働は左様にも可望候得共天下之御耻に而候間拙
　者内之年寄候者共右之段申聞重而可申入

　由承仰候間下々にも申聞候処浜之手大事之所と
　て人に渡し候得者外聞残所も無御座由下々も
　我等同意に申候つる間其段両使へ申述候へは左
　様に候者我等一手に而浜之手之押へを可仕由重
　畳被仰聞候間任其意申候内膳殿十蔵殿手
　に負候所は山を一つ隔其上松倉長門守仕寄を隔
　候而罷在候故御両人之御仕合も御引取候刻後
　に承候我等は初之如く御約束諸家乗込候迄
　待候而居申候
勇功記曰十二月晦日之朝内膳殿十蔵殿亦諸

その意を得て帰った。馬場・榊原がその後申すには「肥後の人数が参って控えております。浜の手は大事な所でありますから、肥後の人数をも加えるべきでしょう」と申されたので、私が申すには「初めから申し請けた持ち口でありますのに、その上大事な所だといって脇へ渡すことは迷惑に存じます。先手を城へ乗り込ませ、旗本は万一敵が打って出てきた場合はこれを防ぐべきだ」と申したところ、「我らが若気でそのように申すのだ。大事な所であるのに一手で城にも乗り、打って出てきた敵をも防ぐべきだなどと申すのはもっともである。一分の働きはそのようにも望めるであろうが、天下の御恥となりますから」と申された。私の内の年寄りの者どもにその段を申し聞かせ、重ねて申し入れる

由を承って仰せになったので、下々にも申し聞かせたところ「浜の手は大事な所だといって人に渡してしまえば、外聞も残るところがございません」と下々も我らと同意に申しました。その段を両使へ申し述べたところ「そういうことであれば、我らが一手で浜の手の押さえをいたしましょう」と重ねて仰せ聞かされたので、その意に任せて申しました。内膳殿・十蔵殿の手に負った所は山を一つ隔て、その上松倉長門守の仕寄を隔てて控えていた故、御両人の御仕合も御引き取りの時に後で承りました。我らは初めの如く御約束通り、諸家が乗り込むまで待って控えておりました。

Since the beach approach is a crucial position, we should add the Higo forces as well." I replied, "This is the position I requested from the beginning, and I find it troublesome to transfer it to others just because it's said to be an important place. The vanguard should climb into the castle, and the banner units should defend if the enemy sallies forth." They responded, "We speak thus in our youthful vigor. It is reasonable to say that with one unit we should both climb the castle and defend against any enemy sortie. While such individual achievement might be desirable, it would bring shame upon the realm." I was told that I should inform my senior retainers of this matter and make another petition.

They agreed with us, saying "If we hand over the beach approach to others just because it's said to be important, it will leave nothing of our reputation." When I conveyed this to both envoys, they repeatedly told us, "In that case, we will hold the beach approach with our single unit," so I agreed to their intention. The positions assigned to Lord Naizen and Lord Jūzō were separated by a mountain, and furthermore separated by Matsukura Nagato-no-kami's siege works, so I learned of both lords' engagement only later when they withdrew. We waited and remained stationed as originally promised, until the various houses launched their assault.
