They had arrived at the base of the wall and attacked, but the crossfire from the outworks (demaru) was fierce, and many of their allies were wounded, so they were trying to withdraw these forces, causing some delay. They said they would observe the situation a little longer before attacking, and they also would not retreat. Naizen-no-sho could no longer contain his anger and consulted with Ishitani Jūzō, who personally went to Hyōbu-dayū's formation to encourage them further. Then Naizen-no-sho went to Monto's formation, where Monto said, "Arima Hyōbu-dayū's forces seem to be lagging since this morning." Naizen-no-sho replied, "Do not pay attention to those who are lagging; give encouragement to those who are advancing now and have them form their battle lines," and left for the main camp. The distance between Monto's and Naizen-no-sho's formations was about two chō. All the various units were completely exhausted from the morning's battle. Naizen-no-sho encouraged and commanded the various formations as described above, but since the members of the various units hesitated to advance, he had no choice but to dismount from his horse and take up his Tōma spear, advancing smoothly toward the castle. Then Ishitani Jūzō came running and said, "Your lordship's leading the charge is not appropriate for an imperial envoy. Please stop." Naizen-no-sho said, "Since the entire attacking force is so exhausted that they will not advance, I intend to lead the charge to inspire them," and took up his commander's baton to direct the various formations to attack, but the various formations still would not advance. Naizen-no-sho had no choice but to lead only his own forces desperately toward the moat...
