He crossed the moat, climbed up a stone wall several dozen jō high, reached the base of the wall, and was about to climb over it when the castle defenders made this their final line of defense and fought desperately. Among his retainers, Hotta Shōzaemon, Satō Shirōemon, Watanabe Sazaemon and others advanced to the front line, followed Naizen-no-sho, fought incomparably, and finally exposed themselves to enemy fire and died in battle. Naizen-no-sho climbed over the wounded and dead, trying to scale the wall, and when he thrust his commander's baton into his sash, the castle defenders recognized him as a general and rushed at him one after another, hurling arrows, bullets, and stones. As Naizen-no-sho pressed forward, his retainer Kobayashi Kyūbei engaged with his spear, killed a castle defender, and proclaimed himself the winner of the first head. Following this, Akabane Genbei and Ogawa Matazaemon advanced on the left and right to fight, when large stones launched frequently from within the castle came flying and struck Naizen-no-sho's karako-gashira helmet, instantly shattering it. Undaunted, he tried to climb up when the castle defenders tore his half-moon wakizashi with bear claws, broke the Tōma spear he held in his hand, and a bullet hit him below the chest. As he tried to pull himself up and stand at the embankment, he lost his life. Both Akabane and Ogawa were wounded, and Kobayashi Kyūbei was also hit by gunfire and injured, but these three men ran over, carried Naizen-no-sho on their shoulders, and descended the stone wall. Meanwhile, Naizen-no-sho's retainers Itō Hannosuke, Takeda Shichirōzaemon, Asai Tahei, and Hirai Shingobei...
