　討死之覚悟与見亭辞世尓
　　去年之新玉尓は烏帽子の緒を志め今年
　　能新玉尓盤甲の緒を志む候移里ける世の
　　中者や討立申候
　　　新玉乃年尓先立咲花は
　　　　世尓名を残春先加希とし連
　　　　　　　　　　　　板倉内膳正
　右の歌は内膳御小姓に而候故別而知音之
　御旗本衆江書置之由内膳元日之朝十蔵
　へ被申候者世間にて侍冥加之徒具る中夫々

　首をさ希るゝと誓文尓立候か我等共盤冥加
　之尽たる事候半江戸に而者今朝は何茂登
　城仕祝儀を可被申に我等共は夫々首をさ希
　羅連ん事無急成事と被申
又曰諸勢志らみ候而二度懸り申事茂ふ罷成
　躰故十蔵も塀下ゟ如何に茂静に被立退候跡
　左右ゟ鉄炮打懸候事不大形候誠に十蔵
　之退ふり見事也と人皆誉申候此時之退
　ふ里は諸手共に振り能者茂有又足場悪
　敷所へ退候もの振悪敷見江多類者茂有

現代語訳

討死の覚悟と見えて辞世に

去年の新玉には烏帽子の緒を締め、今年の新玉には甲の緒を締む候、移りける世の中かな、討ち立て申し候

新玉の年に先立ち咲く花は
世に名を残す春先がけとしれ

板倉内膳正

右の歌は内膳が御小姓であった故、別して親しい御旗本衆へ書き置いた由、内膳が元日の朝十蔵へ申された候は、世間にて侍の冥加の尽きる中、それぞれ首をさらすと誓文に立て候が、我等共は冥加の尽きたる事候半、江戸にては今朝は何れも登城仕り祝儀を申されるに、我等共はそれぞれ首をさらされん事、無急なる事と申された

また曰く、諸勢が退き候て二度懸かり申す事も叶わぬ体故、十蔵も塀下より如何にも静かに立ち退き候跡、左右より鉄砲打ち懸け候事、大形ならず候、誠に十蔵の退きぶり見事なりと人皆褒め申し候、此の時の退きぶりは諸手共に振舞い良き者もあり、また足場悪しき所へ退き候者、振舞い悪しく見える者も多類あり

英語訳

Showing his resolve to die in battle, he composed this death poem:

Last year's New Year I tied the cords of my court cap, this year's New Year I tie the cords of my armor - what a changing world this is, as I go forth to battle

The flower that blooms ahead in the New Year
Know it as the harbinger of spring that leaves its name in the world

Itakura Naizen-no-shō

The above poem - since Naizen had been a page to His Lordship, he wrote it especially for the hatamoto retainers who were close to him. What Naizen said to Jūzō on the morning of New Year's Day was: "In this world where samurai's divine fortune runs out, each has sworn in writing to expose their heads [to danger], but we too may have exhausted our divine fortune. In Edo this morning, everyone would be going to the castle to offer New Year congratulations, yet we are each about to expose our heads [to death] - what an urgent matter this is."

It is also said that since the various forces had withdrawn and could not mount a second assault, Jūzō also withdrew very quietly from beneath the wall. The musket fire directed at them from left and right afterward was considerable. Truly, people all praised Jūzō's withdrawal as magnificent. During this withdrawal, among all the units some behaved well, while there were also many who withdrew to places with poor footing and whose behavior appeared poor.
