　馬内記是を見て貴殿は気之付多る一句を書
　連たる与登云け連は背旗に恥越加々せ申備

登ろうとしたが鉄砲によって眉間を撃ち抜かれ、梯子の上から逆さまに落ちた。主殿も続いて登ったが突き落とされて槍傷を負った。番頭の村上四郎右衛門は塀下を退こうとする者たちに対し「これらの者は槍を横たえて押し登れ、士たる者よ、畜生ども、一足も引かせるな」と叫んだが、鉄砲に当たって忽ち死んだ。同じく番頭の渡瀬将監、陸田甚之丞、渋谷五郎八、戸田勘解由、山崎太郎兵衛も組下の軍士を励まして互いに先登を競ったが、渡瀬、陸田、渋谷、山崎は傷を負い、戸田は幸いにして矢石を逃れた。鉄砲組の大頭である白江作左衛門、泥金兵右衛門、飯沼与右衛門、小野大学並びに先手の足軽頭である馬淵加兵衛、中善太郎、西沢左近右衛門、柳生八郎右衛門、鈴木平兵衛、三浦総左衛門、山口新左衛門、梶村七兵衛（七右衛門、陣代）等は組の足軽を率いて賊城を厳しく攻めたが、ある者は弓矢に当たって命を落とし、ある者は傷を負う者も多かった。その中で白江は早く塀の近くに取り付いて立派な討死を遂げた。この作左衛門は禅を好み、「百尺竿頭進一歩」という文字を指物の絹に書き付けていたのを、前日有馬内記がこれを見て「貴殿は心の込もった一句を書かれた」と言ったところ、「背旗に恥を重ねて申し上げます」と答えた。

Fellow squad leaders Watase Shogen, Rikuta Jinnosuke, Shibuya Gorohachi, Toda Kageyu, and Yamazaki Tarohyoe also encouraged their subordinate soldiers and competed with each other to be first up the walls, but Watase, Rikuta, Shibuya, and Yamazaki were wounded, while Toda fortunately escaped the arrows and stones. The chief gunner Shirae Sakuzaemon, Dorokin Hyoemon, Iinuma Yoemon, Ono Daigaku, and the ashigaru commanders of the vanguard - Mabuchi Kahyoe, Naka Zentaro, Nishizawa Sakonemon, Yagyu Hachiroemon, Suzuki Hyohyoe, Miura Sozaemon, Yamaguchi Shinzaemon, Kajimura Shichihyoe (Shichiemon, deputy commander) and others - led their ashigaru units in a fierce attack on the rebel castle. Some were struck by arrows and lost their lives, while many others were wounded. Among them, Shirae quickly reached the base of the walls and achieved a glorious death in battle. This Sakuzaemon was fond of Zen and had written the phrase "advance one step from the top of a hundred-foot pole" on the silk of his banner. The day before, when Arima Naiki saw this, he said "You have written a very thoughtful verse," to which Sakuzaemon replied "I humbly add shame upon shame to my back banner."
