The forces of the governor pressed toward the attack point, raised battle cries, fired guns, attached to the earthworks, and launched fierce assaults. At that time, Lord Naizen-no-sho and Lord Jūzō encouraged all the troops and pressed their attack on the fence position. Lord Naizen-no-sho was killed in battle, and Lord Jūzō was wounded and withdrew. While Shinano-no-kami's forces were still pressed against the attack point, Lord Jūzō frequently ordered the forces to withdraw, so they pulled back after seven o'clock that evening. On this day, Chief Guard Nabeshima Taitō was killed in battle, and the total number of killed and wounded was 2,254. Totoki Sanaya's record states: "During the castle attack on New Year's Day, if enemies had come out from the beach side and attached themselves near the fence, our forces probably could not have withstood that pressure, so Sakon should have remained in position with backup forces prepared for the beach side. However, perhaps because our main attack was so strong, no enemies came out on the beach side that day." It also states: "On the night of New Year's Day, as reinforcement at Lord Matsukura Nagato-no-kami's siege works, Sakon's forces went to Lord Nagato's siege position. Later, Sakon was assigned the section of Matsukura's siege works that Naizen was to attack, so he constructed siege works and had large cannons and fire arrows deployed and fired." A separate volume of the Shimazu Chronicle states: "In the winter of Kan'ei 14 (1637), when rebels holed up in Shimahara in Hizen, Iejisa sent his retainers Shimazu Bungo Hisayoshi and Shimazu Shimotsuke Hisamoto with additional forces to Shimahara, ordering them to attack following the commands of the imperial envoy. The castle attack began on New Year's Day, and on the 28th day of the second month...
