Nishimura Gohei's memorandum states: "There were four persons who accompanied Takumi: Hayata Jiemon, Takigawa Mokunojō, Kamebuchi Yojirōemon, and Nishimura Gohei. We proceeded as far as the base of the old castle, and I dispatched Mokunojō as a messenger to Ichinojō's quarters to inform them that 'we have just arrived here.' Word came back from Ichinojō's quarters to 'come quickly,' and after eight o'clock [approximately 2 p.m.] we all went to Ichinojō's hut. With Ichinojō as guide, Takumi went to pay his respects to Lord Naizen-no-shō. He was received in audience, and as Lord Naizen-no-shō was soon to ride out to battle, Takumi was ordered to accompany him as a commander and returned. Shortly thereafter, the horses were brought out, and at the earthen mound near Lord Hosokawa Etchu-no-kami's position within the third enclosure [sannomaru], the horses were halted. Sake was sent for, and it was drunk on horseback. A cup was offered to Takumi, with the words: 'Lord Hizen-no-kami's first entry into his domain must be a matter of great celebration for all. Surely he will command a private falconry expedition.' Takumi replied: 'Hizen-no-kami also intends to proceed as soon as word is received. I humbly request that he be summoned.'" It also states: "On New Year's Day of the Year of the Tiger [1638], all forces at the main keep, second enclosure, and third enclosure spent the night attached to the inner side of the walls and engaged in close-quarter fighting from the middle of the night, but were unable to breach them. Around six and a half [approximately 7 a.m.], Lord Naizen-no-shō dismounted from his horse. As all the forces were struggling to breach the walls, and particularly as Lord Matsukura Nagato-no-kami's men had fallen into disorder, [Lord Naizen-no-shō] was about to issue commands and mount [to lead the assault]..."
