When this matter was reported to Tachibana, reinforcements were sent with about fifty ashigaru (foot soldiers) attached to Ma Gonzaemon. Recorded in the Shimabara Record Tiger Year, New Year's Day Masuda Shiro Tokisada A poem written as calligraphy practice We bear arms, constructing castles at this place in the dragon year Government envoys came repeatedly from winter through spring The besieging forces seek to capture and destroy us New Year's battle brings fresh corpses Someone said that the above poem was composed by Tokisada, which people were rumoring at the time Its authenticity is unknown, but it was probably a forgery by someone from the besieging forces However, if it were truly Tokisada's composition, judging by the crude style at this time, Tokisada would appear to be a completely unlearned man. Yet at that time people called Tokisada a scholar of great learning. However, the people of this remote countryside believed that Tokisada was originally unlearned, and various
